Chapter 85 - The Ghost Train of Baden

The iron draisine picked up terrifying speed, hurtling down the forty-degree grade through the mountain's forgotten bowels. Sparks showered from the rusted wheels against the corroded tracks, shrieking like banshees in the enclosed stone tube.
Inside the cab, the smell of burnt diesel and cordite was thick. Alexander leaned heavily against the iron bulkhead, pressing a rag to his bleeding shoulder. His face was pale, beads of cold sweat running down his jaw, but his eyes never left Elena and Leo.
Elena ripped a strip of cloth from her shirt, wrapping Alexander’s wound with trembling, precise movements. "You took a bullet for us... again."
"I spent three years being a coward behind a desk in Manhattan, Elena," Alexander said, his breathing shallow, his hand gently touching her cheek. "I gave you a check to buy my freedom, but all I bought was an empty grave. If I have to bleed every drop I have left to keep you and Leo alive, it's the cheapest bargain I’ve ever made."
Elena’s eyes filled with tears, but her jaw set with an iron resolve he had never seen in her during their quiet years of marriage. "You're not dying here, Alexander. We are not letting Victoria take what Julian built to save this world."
"What did he build, Elena?" Alexander asked quietly. "What is Aegis-7 really?"
Elena looked down at Leo, who had curled up exhausted against Marcus’s uninjured side.
"The Sovereign Syndicate was founded by five European dynasties after the Second World War," Elena revealed in a low, somber voice. "They created a shadow ledger—a hidden financial architecture that laundered trillion-dollar black budgets, controlled central banks, and orchestrated geopolitical collapses for profit. My father was recruited as their chief cryptographer."
"And when he realized what they were doing?"
"He tried to escape," Elena said. "He knew they would kill him and anyone associated with him. So he created Aegis-7. It wasn't a bank. It was a digital guillotine. A program capable of wiping out the Sovereign’s entire offshore ledger in a single second, resetting the hidden wealth back to zero."
"And the Genesis key?" Marcus croaked from the corner.

"The key wasn't a piece of code," Elena whispered, looking at her son. "The Genesis key was mapped to the epigenetic signature of his bloodline. Victoria’s DNA only holds half the sequence—the authorization cipher. But the execution code... the actual trigger... is encoded into Leo’s unique genetic sequence."
Suddenly, the tunnel ahead began to widen. A blinding glare of morning light pierced the darkness as the railcar burst through the collapsed concrete mouth of the mountain, emerging high on a cliffside trestle bridge overlooking the misty expanse of the Rhine Valley below.
