Chapter 73 - The Descent into the Maelstrom

The blast radius had cleared the snow from the hidden service entrance of the abandoned Swiss Alpine railway. Elena kicked through the rusted chain-link gate, her body trembling with adrenaline as she held Leo tightly against her chest.
"I'm here, baby, Mama's got you," she whispered repeatedly, her cheek pressed against Leo's freezing forehead. The boy clung to her neck, his eyes squeezed shut, burying his face in her dark hair.
Alexander shoved Richard through the narrow concrete breach and slipped in right behind them, slamming the heavy iron storm doors shut just as another barrage of cannon fire struck the rock outside, rattling the ceiling and raining dust down upon them. Alexander dropped the emergency steel drop-bar into place, sealing them in absolute darkness.
For several seconds, the only sounds were their ragged breaths and the muffled thunder of the gunships circling helplessly outside.
Alexander clicked on a low-lumen tactical penlight. The beam cut through the damp subterranean mist, revealing an old tunnel descending at a steep forty-five-degree angle into the heart of the mountain.
"Where does this lead?" Elena asked, catching her breath. Her hands were covered in road grime and dark spots of blood, but her eyes were razor-sharp, assessing their perimeter with cool tactical awareness.
"It’s an old maintenance line from the nineteenth century," Alexander said, checking Richard’s wound. The bullet had passed through the flesh of his shoulder, missing the artery, but Richard was going into shock. Alexander ripped the hem of his own shirt and cinched a tourniquet tight around the wound, ignoring his brother’s groan of pain. "It cuts three miles down through the bedrock, dumping out near an abandoned freight siding on the French border."
Richard let out a shuddering laugh from the floor, his back propped against the damp wall. "You think you escaped them? You think running into France saves you?"
Alexander crouched down until his face was inches from Richard's. "Start talking, Richard. Who was on that radio? Who owns the gunships?"
"The same people who told Father to orchestrate your marriage to Elena," Richard spat, blood flecking his lips. "And the same people who ordered you to divorce her three years later."
Elena froze, her gaze snapping toward Alexander in the dim light. "What did he say?"
Alexander’s throat tightened. The room seemed to shrink, the damp cold of the tunnel suddenly suffocating. "Richard, if you lie to her—"
"I don't have to lie anymore, brother!" Richard coughed, shaking his head bitterly. "Look at her! Look at her son! You thought you divorced her because you were rekindling things with Victoria? Victoria was a plant! An operative sent by the Board to distract you while they prepared the Genesis harvest! You transferred one hundred and fifty million dollars to Elena to keep her safe in Willow Creek, but you didn't know... you didn't know that the bank account you sent it to was the activation switch for the sovereign vault."

Elena stepped forward, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "The flower shop. The deed to the shop wasn't bought with his money. It was bought with my father’s trust."
"Your father *was* the Architect, Elena," Richard whispered, his eyes rolling back slightly. "And he hid the master keys in you."
