Chapter 71 - The Sovereign Gambit

The red dot burned against the center of little Leo’s down jacket like a drop of freshly spilled blood. The four-year-old boy was whimpering, his small boots dangling above the icy tarmac as the masked operative held him firmly in an iron grip. The twin gunships above held their hover, their rotor wash whipping the heavy snowfall into a blinding cyclone of white.

"Alexander, don't move!" Elena gasped, her voice raw with terror, though her hands trembled as she reached instinctively toward her child. Every maternal instinct screamed at her to throw herself across the snow, but the faint hum of targeting arrays in the surrounding pine forest held them in a deadly crosshair.

Alexander stepped out of the SUV, his hands raised at shoulder height, his long coat snapping violently in the gale. The sub-zero wind cut into his face, but his pulse was ice-cold. He had spent three years believing his divorce from Elena was an act of cold pragmatism—a transaction to shield her from the wolves of the Vance empire. Now, standing on this mountain precipice above Lake Geneva, he realized that every dollar, every signature, and every lie had merely led them to the real butcher’s block.

"You said Richard was merely a trustee," Alexander called out into the roaring storm, directing his voice toward the lead gunship’s loudspeaker. "If you know who I am, you know that Leo's genetic sequence is locked behind a tripartite biometric cipher. If you pull that trigger, the boy dies, the Genesis Protocol self-terminates, and your entire global reset turns to worthless static."

The synthetic voice from the gunship’s sound system chuckled—a digitized, metallic rasp that vibrated in Alexander's teeth. *"A clever bluff, Alexander Vance. But the Sovereign Core does not trade in bluffs. The boy’s marrow contains the cellular key, alive or dead. Yet, our employer prefers him intact. Throw your weapon onto the ice. Step away from Elena Sinclair."*

In the shattered transport teetering on the guardrail, the front door suddenly kicked open.

Richard Vance stumbled out, clutching his broken shoulder, blood trailing behind him onto the snow. His face was twisted in shock and disbelief as he looked up at the matte-black aircraft he had believed were his personal extraction team.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard screamed at the gunships, his arrogance cracking into frantic rage. "I paid you the retainer! Ten billion from the Zurich reserve accounts! You work for me!"

*"Silence, asset Vance,"* the loudspeaker droned without hesitation. *"Your accounts were seized seven minutes ago. Your liquidation was authorized the moment the child breached sector four."*

Richard turned pale, staring at the operative holding Leo. "No... no, I am the head of Vance Global! You can't—"

Before Richard could take another breath, a silenced round struck him through the shoulder, spinning him violently into the snowbank. The operative holding Leo didn't even look at Richard; his eyes were fixed entirely on Alexander.

"Daddy!" Leo cried out, his voice cutting through the mechanical roar. "Daddy, help me!"

Elena’s eyes met Alexander’s through the swirling storm. In that fleeting second, three years of estrangement, regret, and unspoken devotion collapsed into a single, unspoken signal.

"Leo," Alexander whispered, his hand sliding slowly toward the silver pen clipped inside his lapel—the high-frequency sonic disruptor Marcus Cole had slipped into his pocket before the Geneva safehouse fell. "Close your eyes, buddy."

Alexander depressed the hidden contact.
