Chapter 40 - The Sovereign Breach

Alexander didn't wait for Arthur to finish. He drew a modified Kimber .45 from the holster hidden beneath his trench coat, grabbed Elena’s hand, and bolted toward the heavy blast door of the vault.

"Arthur, override the elevator hydraulics! Now!" Alexander roared.

"The elevators are dead, Alexander!" Arthur shouted back, his fingers flying across the auxiliary mechanical panel as sweat poured down his wrinkled face. "The power junction was severed at the sub-basement level! The only way up is the emergency stairwell shaft—seventy-two flights!"

"Then we climb!" Elena said without a second of hesitation, her eyes burning with maternal fury. "No one touches my son!"

*CLANG-CLANG-CLANG.*

From somewhere directly above the vault ceiling, deep inside the ventilation and drainage shafts, came the rhythmic, unmistakable metallic resonance of heavy magnetic boots moving down the iron framework.

Not moving up. *Moving down.*

Arthur froze, staring up at the reinforced steel air intake vent sixty feet above the pedestal. "They aren't going after the boy..." Arthur whispered, terror lacing his voice. "The boy was the bait to draw us down here. They know Julian Vance hid the Master Cypher Key in this vault!"

Before Alexander could process the words, a piercing, high-frequency screech tore through the chamber's communication speakers.

Alexander’s private satellite phone vibrated violently against his chest.

With his gun trained on the upper ventilation shaft, Alexander pulled the phone from his pocket and hit the speaker button.

"Vance," Alexander growled.

A chilling, electronically modulated voice filtered through the speaker, accompanied by the faint, rhythmic sound of a woman laughing in the background—a cruel, familiar laugh.

"Hello, Alexander," the voice purred, smooth, cultured, and devoid of any human empathy. "Julianna sends her regards from twelve thousand feet. She told me you were quite dramatic in the boardroom this morning."

Elena stepped closer to the phone, her voice cold as an arctic gale. "Who are you?"

"Ah, the brave little florist," the caller chuckled softly. "You played a brilliant hand, Elena. You really did. You stole Marcus’s money, you hid the child, you bought the debt. But you made one fatal mistake."

A deafening detonation rocked the ceiling directly above them. Clouds of pulverized concrete and burning insulation rained down into the crimson-lit vault as the steel blast gates of the elevator shaft groaned, warping under thousands of pounds of high-grade thermite.

"You thought you were fighting a family," the voice whispered through the static, cold and triumphant. "You never realized you were trespassing on the property of the Sovereign."

Through the cracked concrete ceiling above, a single titanium cannister hissed, dropping down through the smoke and landing with a heavy metallic clatter at Elena’s feet.

On the side of the cannister, a digital LED timer was blinking in crimson numbers:

**00:08... 00:07... 00:06...**

And high above the city, from the speakers of the scrambled penthouse camera, came the faint, terrified cry of a four-year-old boy calling out into the dark:

*"Mommy? Daddy?"*
