Chapter 44 - The Broken Vanguard

The night sky over Long Island was torn apart by the muffled roar of twin scramjet turbines.
High above the heavy storm clouds, at forty thousand feet, the matte-black prototype VTOL cut through the stratosphere at Mach 2. Inside the pressurized cockpit, the instruments bathed Alexander’s face in a fierce crimson hue. Next to him, Elena was strapped into the jump seat, wearing a high-altitude tactical rig.
"Platform contact in sixty seconds," Alexander called out through the intercom, his hands working the flight controls with practiced, icy precision. "Their radar is active, sweeping a ten-mile perimeter. Once I cut the main thrusters and engage the glide flaps, we’re going to drop like a rock through the cloud cover."
"Do it," Elena said without a tremor in her voice.
Alexander pulled back the primary throttle levers, killing the thruster flare. The sudden silence inside the cabin was terrifying, broken only by the violent rush of freezing air tearing over the composite wings as the aircraft plummeted through the dense cloud layer.
Below them, the storm-tossed surface of the Atlantic appeared, black waves churning with white foam. And jutting out from the dark sea like a jagged iron monolith was the Sovereign’s offshore fortress—a sprawling, multi-tiered naval platform bristling with radar domes, shipping containers, and industrial cranes.
On the highest deck, the Sikorsky helicopter was already parked, its rotors still spinning lazily in the gale-force wind.
"I see movement on the helipad," Elena yelled over the roar of the wind as the altitude alarm screamed: *TEN THOUSAND... EIGHT THOUSAND... FIVE THOUSAND...*
"Hold on!" Alexander gritted his teeth, slamming the secondary vertical thrusters forward.
The prototype shuddered with bone-snapping force. The retro-burners roared to life fifty feet above the sea, arresting their terminal descent in a blinding blast of blue plasma that scorched the steel plates of the secondary staging deck.
The landing gear slammed down hard on the wet metal, skidding twenty yards before coming to a violent stop directly behind the fuel storage silos.
Before the engines could even spool down, the hydraulic side hatch hissed open.
Alexander and Elena breached into the howling storm side by side, weapons raised.
Immediately, two armed mercenaries guarding the access gantry turned, raising their automatic rifles. Elena didn't hesitate; two sharp, suppressed cracks from her carbine dropped the guards instantly into the iron grating.
Alexander swept forward, kicking their weapons into the dark ocean below. "The helipad elevator is already descending. They’re taking him to the lower control module."

Through the roar of the rain, a familiar voice suddenly crackled through the platform's public address speakers, dripping with theatrical malice.
"Welcome to the end of the world, Alexander!" Julianna’s voice echoed across the storm-battered platform. "I must admit, dropping out of the sky was quite cinematic. But you're too late. The transfer is already complete. And your little boy is terrified."
