Chapter 81 - The Darkness Within

The sudden plunge into absolute darkness swallowed the subterranean chamber in a suffocating vacuum. The mechanical hum of the Aegis-7 mainframe abruptly died, replaced by the ragged breathing of trapped survivors and the metallic click of tactical rifles cycling ammunition in the breach.

"Night vision! Flank the perimeter!" a mercenary officer barked in guttural German from the top of the stairs.

Green luminescent beams cut through the gloom like ghostly daggers. But Alexander had not survived a decade of cutthroat corporate wars and shadow syndicates by relying on his eyes alone. The moment the power cut, he dropped low, sweeping his arm outward to shove Elena and Leo behind the reinforced titanium pedestal of the central console.

"Stay down! Don't move an inch!" Alexander hissed, his voice razor-sharp.

He fired two suppressed rounds into the doorway. A dull thud and a sharp cry echoed down the concrete steps as the lead mercenary tumbled into the abyss. Muzzle flashes instantly illuminated the entryway in staccato bursts of orange and white, ricochets screaming off the blast-hardened walls.

"Alexander, the terminal!" Elena whispered urgently, her fingers clutching Leo’s trembling shoulders against her chest. "The blackout wasn't Victoria’s doing—it’s Father’s auxiliary defensive subroutine! When the primary lock was overridden by an unauthorized secondary host, the system diverted all power to the subterranean exhaust valves!"

"What does that mean?" Alexander demanded, firing another controlled pair at a shadow darting across the threshold.

"It means this entire chamber is about to be flooded with high-pressure nitrogen to extinguish electrical fires," Elena said, her voice shaking with horrific realization. "In less than ninety seconds, there won't be any oxygen left in this room!"

Up on the catwalk above the open vault door, a flare hissed to life, casting blinding crimson shadows over the brutalist architecture. Standing at the threshold, unaffected by the chaos, Victoria Sterling walked down the iron staircase, flanked by four heavily armored operatives with respirator helmets. In her hand, she held an ornate silver gas mask, casually swinging it by its strap.

"You always were Father's sentimental little fool, Elena," Victoria's voice rang out through the gunfire, cold and crystalline. "Did you truly think Julian left that music box to you out of love? He left it because he was terrified of me! He knew that once I integrated the Sovereign Ledger with the Genesis neural key, the entire global banking cartel would kneel before the true architect!"

"You're insane, Victoria!" Alexander snarled, leaning out from behind the console and squeezing off three rapid shots.

The bullets sparked off the ballistic shield carried by Victoria’s point man. Victoria didn't even flinch. She simply smiled beneath the blood-red flare light.

"Kill the men," Victoria instructed calmly. "Bring me my little sister. And bring me the boy. His pulse is the only key that can finalize the transfer."
