Chapter 78 - Blood and Iron

The Black Forest was deathly silent as the first mechanized convoy arrived.

Three armored scout vehicles, accompanied by eight black-clad operatives moving in diamond formation through the deep snow, cut their engines two hundred yards from the stone cottage. Their thermal goggles swept the tree line, identifying the faint heat signature rising from the cottage's chimney.

"Target confirmed," the strike team leader whispered through his throat mic. "Asset Vance is inside with the package. Non-lethal on the child. Terminate all other occupants."

Suddenly, the snow beneath the lead operative’s boots collapsed.

A high-pressure pneumatic spike shot upward through the crust, driving into the operative's chest plate and hurling him backward into the brush. Before the rest of the squad could react, a series of pre-planted directional mines detonated along the perimeter.

*CRACK-BOOM!*

A wall of steel ball bearings and concussive force shredded the trees, flipping the lead scout vehicle onto its side in a plume of fiery debris.

From the high branches of an ancient oak, Alexander opened fire.

He fired in controlled, three-round bursts, eliminating two operatives before they could find cover behind the burning wreckage. The remaining soldiers immediately returned fire, a hail of automatic rounds tearing through the branches, peeling bark and pine needles away in a furious storm.

Alexander dropped from the tree, landing smoothly in the deep snow behind a granite boulder. He discarded his empty magazine, slammed a fresh one home, and rolled to the right as an under-barrel grenade exploded against the rock where he had been crouching a fraction of a second earlier.

The concussive wave slammed into his ribs, driving the breath from his lungs, but he ignored the blinding pain. He came up firing, catching an operative flanking him from the left.

"Fall back to the tree line!" an operative shouted. "He's heavily armed!"

Alexander wasn't fighting like a billionaire in a boardroom; he was fighting like a man who had already stood over his own grave and realized he had nothing left to lose except the people he loved.

Down below in the bunker, Elena watched the thermal tactical display on the primary screen. Her heart was in her throat. She saw the swarm of enemy blips converging on Alexander’s single, isolated beacon.

"Upload complete: 78 percent," the computer system chimed in an unbothered, electronic tone.

"Faster, damn it," Elena cursed under her breath, her hands flying across the controls to route emergency power to the surface turret defenses.

Leo had woken up from the thunderous rumbling above. He didn't cry. He walked over to Elena, his little hand reaching up to touch her trembling fingers on the keyboard. "Mama... is Daddy winning?"

May you like

Elena looked down at her son, swallowing the lump of tears in her throat, her jaw setting with cold resolve. "Your father is holding the line, Leo. Now it's our turn."

She slammed down the manual fire-override switch for the perimeter defense grid.
