Chapter 60 - The Echo of Genesis

Mercer threw a flash-concussion canister across the marble floor.
A blinding burst of white light and a deafening crack shook the chamber. Alexander dropped to one knee, firing four controlled bursts through the flash. Two mercenaries dropped instantly. The third lunged toward Elena, but Alexander intercepted him, slamming his rifle butt across the man’s jaw and driving him hard into the stone floor with a sickening crunch.
Gunfire erupted in the confined space, ricocheting off the ballistic glass walls.
Julianna screamed, stumbling backward toward the central terminal, frantically mashing the detonator button.
*CLICK. CLICK.*
Nothing happened.
The console behind her flashed with cold blue text: *DETONATION OVERRIDE ENGAGED BY PRIMARY ARCHON BIOMETRIC PROXIMITY.*
The terminal had recognized Elena’s presence in the room; its automated internal fire-suppression systems had already flooded the thermite charges with liquid nitrogen, freezing the firing pins solid.
Julianna stared at the useless detonator, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She looked up just as Elena reached the dais.
Elena didn't hesitate. With all the force of three years of accumulated betrayal, grief, and terror, she brought her palm across Julianna's face. The impact echoed like a gunshot, sending the heiress sprawling across the steps of the terminal, blood pooling from her split lip onto the black marble.
Alexander moved up beside Elena, his rifle lowered, the remaining mercenaries disarmed and kneeling under Mercer's watch.
"It's finished," Alexander breathed, looking at Elena.
"Not yet," Julianna wheezed from the floor, coughing up blood, a twisted, terrifying smile spreading across her battered face. She looked toward the glowing sovereign screen above the terminal. "You think... you think you won? You think Archibald and Richard Vance were the architects of this game?"
A low, resonant hum began to vibrate through the floor of the Citadel, deeper and more powerful than the submarine's engines.
On the central crystalline pillar, the master digital ledger suddenly bypassed Elena’s biometric lock. The text turned from blue to a burning, ominous crimson.
*GENESIS PROTOCOL PHASE II INITIATED.*
*REMOTE ACCESS GRANTED: GENEVA SANCTUARY.*
Elena and Alexander stared at the terminal screen as an automated video feed snapped into existence.
On the screen was not an empty boardroom. Sitting behind a mahogany desk in an opulent, high-security office overlooking Lake Geneva was a figure that made Alexander’s weapon slip from his grasp, his entire body freezing in utter disbelief.
The man on the screen adjusted his glasses, looking directly into the camera with cold, aristocratic amusement.
"You performed admirably, Alexander," the man spoke, his deep, familiar voice echoing through the Arctic vault. "And Elena... your mother's resilience truly lives in you."
Alexander choked on his breath, his voice barely a rasp. "Father...?"
Richard Vance—declared dead and cremated three years ago, the very death that had triggered Alexander's divorce and the unraveling of his life—smiled through the screen.

"Did you truly believe, my boy, that I would leave a three-trillion-dollar sovereign throne to chance?" Richard said smoothly, his eyes shifting toward little Leo sleeping in Elena's arms. "Thank you for bringing the key to the vault. Containment purge commencing in sixty seconds."
Beneath their feet, the massive titanium blast doors of the Inner Sanctum began to slide shut, locking them inside the mountain.
