Chapter 47 - The Iron Convoy

The descent to Level 4 was a silent march into the lion’s den.
Steam hissed from cracked pipes, condensation dripping down the corroded iron bulkheads like tears. Alexander and Elena moved side by side down the spiral catwalk, their weapons lowered, their hands visible, but their bodies coiled like spring steel.
At the threshold of the observation chamber, four masked mercenaries stepped forward, disarming Alexander of his primary carbine and sidearm. They shoved him roughly through the blast doors, but when one of the guards reached to grab Elena’s shoulder, she caught the man’s wrist in an iron grip, twisting it back until the bone audibly popped.
"Touch me again, and you won't live to see your next paycheck," she hissed in a low, terrifying voice.
The guard stepped back, clutching his fractured wrist, cursing beneath his breath.
Inside the cavernous chamber, the wind howled through reinforced glass vents overlooking the raging sea below. In the center of the room, on a raised dais, sat Archibald Vance. Beside him, Julianna looked down at Elena with a triumphant, venomous smirk, her fingers lightly resting on little Leo’s shoulder.
"Mommy! Daddy!" Leo cried out, trying to lurch forward, but the mercenary behind him held him firmly by the collar of his coat.
"Leo, look at me," Elena’s voice transformed instantly from lethal ice to absolute, comforting warmth. "Stay right where you are, sweetheart. Keep your eyes on Mommy. Everything is going to be okay."
"What a touching domestic reunion," Julianna purred, stepping forward, her high heels clicking loudly against the diamond-tread steel. "Three years of hiding in a quaint little flower shop in the woods, Elena. Did you really think you could keep him from us? Alexander belongs to me. This empire belongs to us."
Alexander stepped forward, putting his body between Julianna and Elena. "Let the boy go, Julianna. You have me. You have Archibald. Your war was with the Vance board, not an innocent four-year-old child."

Archibald chuckled, a deep, rasping sound that rattled in his throat like dry autumn leaves. "You still don't understand, Alexander. The boy isn't just an innocent hostage. He is the only biological heir whose retina can unlock the orbital defense network. Your father knew that one day you might be corrupted, so he encoded the root protocol into the bloodline's future."
Archibald leaned forward on his walking stick, his eyes gleaming like polished obsidian. "Hand over the physical key, Elena. Or I take the boy's eye, and you take his corpse."
