Chapter 26 - The Unraveling Syndicate

Before Alexander could answer, the heavy wooden door at the top of the stone stairs creaked open. Gabriel stepped down into the basement, shaking thick snow from his heavy wool cap. His face was grim, his jaw set in stone.

"Julianna reached the regional airstrip," Gabriel announced, tossing a secure satellite phone onto the wooden table between them. "Her private jet took off ten minutes ago heading south toward the capital. Local police found two of her contractors abandoned at a motel outside town—she left them behind without transport or pay. Typical corporate cleanup."

Alexander stood up, wincing as his ribs flared with pain. "Did the contractors talk?"

"They didn't have to," Gabriel said, pulling a black leather-bound ledger and an encrypted thumb drive from inside his tactical coat. "I retrieved these from the glove box of their secondary transport before setting the vehicle on fire. Julianna wasn't acting as a rogue operative, Alexander. Look at the transaction logs."

Alexander plugged the drive into Gabriel’s ruggedized field laptop. The screen flickered to life, scrolling through lines of intercepted emails, financial transfers, and corporate board minutes.

The truth laid bare on the screen was monstrous.

The $150,000,000 divorce settlement Alexander had paid Elena three years ago had never come entirely from his liquid accounts. His chief legal counsel and long-time family attorney, Jonathan Croft, had routed the funds through a syndicated escrow account backed by Sterling Capital.

"They engineered the divorce from day one," Alexander whispered, his eyes scanning the documents in horror. "Croft... he’s been on Julianna’s father’s payroll for nearly a decade."

"They knew about Elena’s pregnancy before you did," Gabriel said, leaning over Alexander’s shoulder and tapping the screen. "Look at the dates. Elena’s private OB-GYN clinic in the capital was acquired by a Sterling subsidiary two weeks before she left you. They intercepted the medical records. They intentionally hid the pregnancy from you, manipulated you into believing Elena was emotionally distant and demanding a payout, and pushed Julianna into your path to step into the vacuum."

Elena sat in stunned silence, her hand covering her mouth, her eyes wide with shock. "They... they knew I was carrying Leo before I even knew myself?"

"They needed you out of the picture, pregnant and isolated," Alexander said, the sheer magnitude of the betrayal washing over him with sickening clarity. "Because if I had known she was carrying my child, I never would have signed the separation agreement. I never would have let Julianna near the estate. They wanted the heir born far away from my lawyers, waiting for the exact moment the Vance Foundational Trust reached its maturity date."

"Which is when?" Gabriel asked.

Alexander looked up from the screen, his face as pale as the snow falling outside.

"Tomorrow at noon," Alexander said. "The centenary meeting of the Vance Trust Board in Manhattan. If no legitimate heir is physically presented or accounted for by the head of the bloodline, the entire trust defaults automatically to the primary corporate trustee."

"Julianna’s father," Gabriel concluded darkly. "Marcus Sterling."
