Chapter 57 - The Citadel of Glass

Fourteen hours later, the *Nautilus-Omega* surfaced amidst the jagged, snow-capped fjords of Spitsbergen.
A blizzard raged across the frozen landscape. Through night-vision optics, the Citadel of Glass rose from the permafrost—a brutalist monolith constructed of reinforced concrete, ballistic glass, and dark tungsten, carved directly into the side of an arctic mountain. It was designed to withstand a nuclear strike, housing the ultimate financial and legal records of the old-world dynasties.
The heavy perimeter blast doors of the Citadel stood open, black scorch marks scarring the snow around the entrance.
"Her assault team arrived ahead of us," Mercer announced as he strapped on a tactical vest and handed Alexander an assault rifle. "Julianna’s private military contractor, the Iron Vanguard, has already breached the outer security cordon."
Elena was dressed in an insulated tactical parka, Leo securely bound to her chest in a reinforced, Kevlar-lined carrier, protected by a thermal weather hood. She refused to leave the boy behind in the submarine; in a world where every faction was hunting his blood, the only safe place for him was in her arms.
"We take the southern service tunnel," Alexander instructed, checking his rifle's optical sight. "It bypasses the main atrium and leads directly to the central vault floor."
"The automated defenses will be active," Mercer warned. "Archibald's death triggered the fortress's quarantine mode. The turrets will fire on anything without a verified biometric signature."
"Then Elena leads," Alexander said grimly. "Her DNA is the master key. They fire on us, they fire on the trust."
Stepping out onto the frozen ice shelf, the biting arctic wind whipped against their faces. They moved in tactical formation across the frozen tundra, entering the dark, cavernous mouth of the Citadel.
Inside, the air smelled of ozone, cordite, and copper. Bodies of private security guards lay scattered across the polished marble floors of the receiving hall, cut down by precision gunfire.
