Chapter 54 - The Cradle of Lies

Silence settled over the medical bay, heavy and suffocating. The hum of the vessel's propulsion engines deep beneath their feet felt like the steady heartbeat of an unseen monster.
"That's impossible," Elena whispered, shaking her head in denial. "My mother... the woman who raised me until I was six... she was a seamstress. She died in a clinic in Albany."
"She was a senior operative under my direct command," Mercer countered gently. "Her mission was to keep you alive and invisible until the treaty expired. But twenty-five years ago, Archibald Sterling discovered the Vance family had infiltrated his biological research division. In retaliation, he ordered the purge of his own kin to ensure undisputed control of the family patents."
Mercer touched the screen, bringing up old, grainy black-and-white surveillance footage. It showed a burning mansion on a stormy night, followed by a young Julian Mercer carrying an infant wrapped in a blanket into the back of an unmarked ambulance.
"Archibald believed he had killed his brother's line," Mercer continued. "Your biological parents died that night, Elena. But your father entrusted you to me. To keep you safe, I hid you in plain sight. I placed you where no one would ever look for a multi-billion-dollar heiress: in the foster system, surviving on state stipends, completely stripped of your heritage."
Alexander took a ragged breath, the pieces of a grotesque puzzle finally snapping together in his mind. "And my father? What did Richard Vance know?"
"Your father knew everything," Mercer said, turning toward Alexander with a look of bitter pity. "Richard Vance orchestrated your marriage to Elena four years ago. Not out of love, and not by coincidence. He arranged for you to meet her at that charity gala because he had decoded the trust's parameters. He knew that if a Vance male married the true Sterling heir, the hidden vaults of the Sovereign Trust would unlock on your fifth anniversary."
Elena gasped, staring at Alexander in pure shock.
Alexander took a step back, his face draining of color. "No... No, that's not true. I fell in love with her on my own. My father opposed the marriage! He threatened to disinherit me!"
"A performance," Mercer said mercilessly. "A theater designed to force you to hold onto her tighter. But then Julianna discovered the medical records. Julianna realized that she was merely a surrogate decoy whose wealth would evaporate the moment Elena turned twenty-eight. So Julianna orchestrated the blackmail, feeding your father false intelligence that Elena was a corporate spy."

Mercer leaned forward, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "You thought you were a savior when you gave her that hundred and fifty million dollars, Alexander. In reality, you did exactly what Julianna and the rogue council wanted: you cast the rightful queen into the shadows, leaving the throne open for a slaughter."
