Chapter 21 - The Cold Abyss

The icy wind howling through the shattered glass panes of the flower shop did nothing to cool the raging fire burning inside Alexander’s chest. The shattered screen of Elena’s phone went dark, but Julianna’s mocking laughter continued to echo against the timber walls, mingling with the sickening stench of trampled winter berries, wet fertilizer, and drying red paint.
"Alexander, breathe," Gabriel said, his hand clamping down onto Alexander’s shoulder like an iron vise. "Losing your head right now is exactly what that psychotic bitch wants. Look at the board before you make a move."
Alexander shook his head violently, shaking off Gabriel’s grip. His knuckles were bone-white as his fingers dug into the cracked plastic casing of the phone. "You saw her face, Gabriel! You saw what they did to Elena! That bruise on her cheek... she’s terrified. If Julianna lays one more finger on her—"
"Then you’ll kill her, yes, I know," Gabriel interrupted, his voice dropping into a harsh, steady whisper. "And then what? Her security team shoots you dead, they take Leo anyway, and the child grows up in the hands of the very monsters who tore his mother apart. Is that the redemption you promised when you walked back into this town?"
The mention of Leo snapped Alexander back to reality like a slap across the jaw. He looked around the ruined shop—the sanctuary Elena had poured three agonizing years of her life into building, destroyed in a single afternoon of malice.
"The boy," Alexander breathed, his pulse racing. "Where is Leo?"
"He’s with Mrs. Higgins at the old cannery cellar behind the docks," Gabriel replied quietly, keeping his flashlight trained on the floor to inspect the tire tracks and boot impressions left in the melted slush. "Four inches of reinforced concrete and a hidden blast hatch. They don’t know he’s there. They tore this place apart looking for him first, didn't find him, and grabbed Elena as leverage."
Alexander examined the deep, jagged tread marks near the rear exit. "Commercial winter tires. Heavy tread. A tactical SUV, probably rented under a shell corporation from the regional airstrip forty miles out. Julianna didn't bring a private army—she brought a hired strike team."
"Which means they’re playing by corporate contractor rules," Gabriel reasoned, pulling a tactical sidearm from his coat and checking the magazine with a sharp, metallic click. "Strict timetable, ruthless execution, but ultimately driven by money. But Julianna... she’s driven by pure spite. Midnight at the North Cliff dock gives us less than two hours."
Alexander looked up at the blackened sky outside. The blizzard was gathering strength, sheets of fine, needle-like sleet beginning to rattle against the weatherboards. "She wants me to bring Leo alone. If I don't show, she kills Elena. If I bring Leo, she takes him and executes both of us to bury the bloodline claim once and for all."

"Then we don't play her game," Gabriel said, his dark eyes glinting in the pale light. "We write our own rules. We have two hours to turn that cliff into an ambush."
