Chapter 80 - The Edge of Oblivion

The intercom on the bunker's console chimed, cutting through the wail of the proximity siren.

Elena stepped back from the screen, her grip on Leo tightening until her knuckles turned white. Alexander moved between his family and the monitors, his weapon raised, his breath coming in ragged, painful gasps from his cracked ribs.

*"Alexander, darling,"* Victoria's voice echoed through the high-end speakers, smooth as silk and dripping with venomous amusement. *"Did you really think you could play soldier in the woods and save the day? You always were hopelessly sentimental."*

Alexander stepped toward the console, pressing the two-way communications toggle. "Stay away from this mountain, Victoria. The Ledger is purging. Your accounts are evaporating as we speak. In three minutes, you won't have enough money to buy fuel for that chopper."

A low, melodic laugh drifted from the speakers.

*"Oh, Alex... you still don't understand the game you're playing,"* Victoria replied. *"Do you really think the Sovereign Core cares about money? Fiat currency, digital credits, stock portfolios—those were toys we gave you and your pathetic brother to keep you occupied while the true empire was built."*

On the screen, Victoria walked toward the bunker's external blast hatch, completely unbothered by the burning wreckage and corpses surrounding her. She reached into her coat and pulled out a small, metallic sphere—a device that pulsed with a deep, rhythmic violet light.

Behind Alexander, the master console suddenly flashed bright blue.

The countdown timer for the Aegis-7 purge abruptly froze at **99.9%**.

**SYSTEM HALTED.**

**MANUAL ARCHITECT OVERRIDE DETECTED.**

**SECONDARY HOST IDENTITY: VERIFIED.**

Elena gasped, staring at the screen in pure disbelief. "No... that's impossible. Only my father and Leo have the sequence!"

*"Your father was a brilliant man, Elena,"* Victoria’s voice purred through the speaker. *"A visionary. But like all brilliant men, he had a fatal flaw. He trusted his inner circle. Who do you think funded his research twenty-five years ago? Who do you think stood beside him in the Geneva laboratory when he mapped the original neural keys?"*

Victoria stopped right before the camera lens, leaning in so close that her cold, grey eyes filled the entire bunker screen. She lifted her left hand, pulling off her black leather glove.

On the back of her hand was a surgical scar—an identical biometric node to the one embedded in Elena's music box.

*"Julian Sinclair was my mentor,"* Victoria whispered, her smile vanishing into chilling, absolute authority. *"And before he died, he gave the secondary cipher to his eldest daughter."*

Elena froze, her blood turning to ice. "What... what did you say?"

*"Did Father never tell you about the daughter he had before he married your mother, little sister?"* Victoria laughed softly, her voice full of dark triumph. *"You got his conscience. I got his ambition."*

Victoria pressed the metallic sphere against the external hatch.

A deafening hydraulic hiss echoed throughout the subterranean chamber as the three-ton titanium blast door—the unbreakable barrier protecting them—unlocked from the outside and slowly began to swing open.

In the blinding light of the clearing above, the shadows of heavily armed mercenaries flooded down the stone staircase, while Victoria’s laughter echoed off the walls like a death sentence.

Alexander raised his weapon, stepping directly into the breach, but before he could fire, the lights throughout the entire facility went pitch black.
