Chapter 25 - The Broken Safehouse

The basement of Gabriel’s safehouse beneath the old cannery smelled of iodine, damp stone, and woodsmoke.
A single kerosene lamp hung from an iron hook in the ceiling, casting long, swaying shadows across the room. In the far corner, tucked safely beneath a pile of heavy quilts on an old cot, little Leo was fast asleep, clutching a carved wooden trawler Gabriel had given him.
Elena sat on a wooden crate opposite Alexander, her hands trembling as she held a pair of surgical shears, cutting away the bloody sleeve of his coat.
"Hold still," she whispered, her voice choked with unshed tears. "You're bleeding through the gauze."
"I’m fine," Alexander said softly, though every breath sent a sharp stab of agony through his cracked ribs. He watched her face—the purpling bruise along her jawline, the cut on her lip, the exhaustion etched into every line of her features. "Elena... I'm so sorry. I brought this plague back into your life. You had peace here, and I destroyed it."
Elena stopped cutting. She set the shears down with a trembling hand and looked directly into his eyes.
"You didn't destroy it, Alexander," she said, her voice shaking with a mixture of anger and grief. "They did. They were coming for Leo whether you came to this town or not. Did you really think you were the only one who noticed the photograph?"
Alexander froze. "What do you mean?"
Elena reached into the pocket of her oversized wool sweater—the one Gabriel had lent her after cutting her bindings—and pulled out a crumpled, water-damaged piece of heavy cardstock. She unfolded it and handed it to him.
It was a glossy printout of the exact photograph that had brought Alexander to the harbor—the picture of Elena standing outside *The Petal & Thistle*, with Leo playing in the foreground holding that miniature brass compass.
Except this copy didn't come from a luxury lifestyle blog.
Stamped across the top in red ink was a corporate watermark: *STERLING ASSET MANAGEMENT — TARGET ACQUISITION & RECOVERY.*
"Julianna’s men approached me two weeks ago," Elena confessed, tears finally breaking free and running down her bruised cheeks. "Before you ever set foot off that ferry. A man in a dark suit came into the shop, bought three white lilies, and left this photo on the counter with a burner phone. He said if I didn't sign over full guardianship of Leo to Julianna Sterling within thirty days, they would burn the town, take him anyway, and make sure my body was never found."
Alexander felt the room spin. The cold, calculated cruelty of the Sterling family was far deeper, far more insidious than he had ever imagined.
"Why didn't you run?" Alexander demanded, his voice cracking. "Why didn't you take Leo and disappear into Canada?"
"Because of you," Elena whispered, looking toward the sleeping boy. "Because before that man walked out of the shop, he told me that you had signed the authorization papers. He told me that you—Alexander Vance—had sent them to collect your bastard son so your new wife could have her heir."
Alexander felt as though the floor had dropped out beneath him. "You thought... you thought I sent them?"

"What else was I supposed to believe?!" Elena cried, her voice rising in anguish before she clamped her hand over her mouth to avoid waking the child. "You gave me a hundred and fifty million dollars to throw me out of your life! You chose her! You let her take everything! When those men came with papers bearing your forged signature... I thought you had come back to finish what you started."
