Chapter 49 - The Mother’s Vengeance

The bullet from Julianna’s gun whizzed an inch past Elena’s ear, shattering the glass viewing port behind her into a million spiderwebs.
Elena didn't even flinch. She closed the distance in two lethal strides, kicking the revolver clean out of Julianna’s grip. The gun spun across the wet grating and plummeted down into the dark abyss of the moon pool below.
Julianna backed against the wall, clutching her bruised wrist, terror finally drowning out her arrogance. "Elena... please! It wasn't my idea! Archibald forced me! He threatened my family—"
"You don't have a family," Elena said, her voice dropping to a deadly, quiet register as she pressed the cold muzzle of the captured weapon directly between Julianna’s eyes. "You have contracts. You have greed. And you have the audacity to touch my son."
"Elena, wait!" Alexander’s voice cut through the gunfire from the other side of the chamber.
He stepped out from behind the pillar, his coat wrapped tightly around Leo, his eyes locked on Archibald Vance, who was struggling to pull a secondary detonator from his walking stick.
With a lightning-fast motion, Alexander raised a dropped rifle and fired a single round through Archibald’s right shoulder. The old man screamed, dropping the cane as he collapsed against the console, clutching his bleeding joint.
Alexander walked over, kicking the cane away into the darkness. "It’s over, Uncle. The debt notes are called in. The Sovereign is bankrupt. The federal marshals and international naval forces are tracking the VTOL's distress beacon right now. You have five minutes before this entire platform is swarmed."
Julianna looked back and forth between Alexander and Elena, tears of panic finally streaking her makeup. "You won't kill me. Alexander... you loved me! You gave up everything for me! You paid a hundred and fifty million just to hold my hand again!"
Alexander looked down at the woman he had once thrown his life away for, and felt nothing. Not rage, not sorrow, not even regret. Only the profound, cold realization of his own past foolishness.
"I didn't love you, Julianna," Alexander said quietly. "I was in love with a phantom you created to keep me blind. But my wife... my wife was the only real thing I ever had."
Elena lowered the weapon slightly, looking at Alexander, their eyes meeting across the dark, ruined chamber.
For the first time in three years, the hollow echo in Alexander’s chest was replaced by a roaring, unbreakable fire.

"Mommy..." Leo whimpered softly from Alexander's arms, reaching out his small, bruised hand.
Elena dropped the gun to her side, her hard, lethal expression melting into pure, maternal tears as she stepped toward them, opening her arms to take her son into her embrace.
