Chapter 63 - The Phantom of Lake Geneva

Twelve hours later, fifty miles off the coast of northern Norway.
The converted commercial trawler cut through the gray, towering swells of the Norwegian Sea. Below deck, inside the heated crew cabin, the only sound was the rhythmic hum of the diesel engine and the soft breathing of Leo, who slept soundly beneath a wool blanket on the bench.
Elena sat opposite Alexander at the galley table. Before them lay a borrowed satellite terminal, spliced directly into the encrypted hard drive Alexander had extracted from the Citadel.
On the screen, financial transactions flickered like cascading green rain.
"It's not just money," Elena said quietly, her eyes tracing the lines of code. "Look at the routing numbers. The $150 million divorce settlement you wired me three years ago wasn't spent when I bought the greenhouse in Maine. Only a fraction of it was ever touched. The rest... it acted as an offshore anchor."
Alexander leaned in, his knuckles white against the rim of his mug of black coffee. "It drew in sovereign capital from twelve shadow accounts. Every time Julianna attacked you, every time Archibald Sterling’s syndicate made a move against your flower shop, automated micro-transactions were triggered. The system was designed to stress-test your resilience. Richard wanted to make sure you wouldn't collapse under pressure before the Genesis Protocol went live."
"He treated our son like an encryption key and my life like a stress-test," Elena whispered, her voice hardening with an icy resolve Alexander had never seen before. The gentle florist who had once tended to rare winter lilies was entirely gone; in her place stood a woman forged in fire, betrayal, and survival. "Where is he, Alexander?"
Alexander tapped the screen, bringing up a live geo-satellite tracking ping originating from an IP address routed through a private server in Switzerland.
"Villa de l'Ombre," Alexander said. "A fortress estate on the shores of Lake Geneva. It’s been in the Vance family since 1888. He bought out the entire promontory. Private radar, anti-aircraft batteries disguised as ornamental towers, and a deep-water dock connecting directly to the lake’s international shipping lanes."
"He announced a summit," Mercer said, walking down the metal ladder from the wheelhouse. He threw a printed intercept onto the table. "Forty-eight hours from now. Richard Vance is emerging from the grave. He has invited seventy of the world's most powerful sovereign creditors, hedge fund titans, and defense contractors to Geneva."
Elena looked at the guest list. "Why? If he has the money, why show his face?"
"Because of Leo," Alexander realized, his eyes widening with realization. "The biometric key on this drive is incomplete. The Arctic Citadel only verified fifty percent of the genetic cipher. To fully unlock the three-trillion-dollar sovereign treasury, he needs the boy physically present before the Geneva banking council. He didn't want to kill us in that vault, Elena. He wanted to trap us, break us, and force us to bring Leo to his doorstep."

Elena’s hand instinctively drifted toward the sleeping boy. "He will die before he touches my son again."
