Chapter 39 - Whispers in the Dark

The subterranean vault fell into a suffocating, terrifying stillness.

"Extracted?" Elena’s voice was sharp, cutting through the shock like a surgical scalpel. "She was surrounded by federal marshals!"

"Two marshals are dead, three are critically wounded," Arthur answered, reading the rapidly updating casualty manifest on his encrypted tablet. "A black military helicopter touched down directly on the closed bridge span, blew the rear doors off the federal transport vehicle using shaped thermite charges, and pulled Julianna out before the tactical response team could even deploy."

Alexander stepped toward the vault terminal, his jaw locked in fury. "She knew. She played the weeping victim in the boardroom to buy herself time until her handlers could stage an ambush on the open road."

"She wasn't weeping for her father," Elena said, her eyes narrowing as she recalled Julianna’s hysterical cries in the boardroom. "When she looked at the window right before the marshals took her... she wasn't looking at the city. She was checking the cloud cover. She was checking the flight ceiling."

Elena turned to Alexander, her grip on his arm tightening with fierce urgency. "Alexander, Leo! Where is Leo right now?"

"He's in the penthouse fortress on the seventy-second floor," Alexander replied, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Arthur’s elite executive guard is stationed at every access point. The building has blast shutters that can withstand an anti-tank missile."

"A fortress is only as strong as its foundation, Alexander," Arthur said darkly, rapidly typing command sequences into the main vault terminal. "If the Sovereign Syndicate has activated active tactical assets on Manhattan soil, they aren't trying to reclaim Vance Global through the courts anymore. They are scrubbing the board."

Suddenly, the hum of the geothermal cooling units beneath their feet died.

The brilliant white fluorescent lighting of the Vault of Glass flickered once, twice, and then snapped off entirely.

For two agonizing seconds, they were plunged into total, suffocating pitch-blackness.

Then, with a dull hydraulic groan, the auxiliary emergency lights kicked on, bathing the concrete and titanium chamber in a bloody, low-voltage red glow.

On the main terminal screen, the live security feeds of the Vance-Sterling Tower began to blink out one by one.

*Camera 72 (Executive Penthouse): Signal Scrambled.*

"Alexander!" Elena gasped, her voice raw with a mother's sheer terror.

"The grid didn't fail," Arthur whispered, staring at the cascading red system errors with wide, horrified eyes. "Someone inside the central mainframe initiated a manual override. The building is on lockdown... but the command didn't come from down here."
