Chapter 41 - The Shattered Blast

The timer hit three.
Alexander didn't hesitate. With a violent, desperate heave, he drove his shoulder into Elena’s waist, carrying her off her feet and hurtling them both behind the two-ton titanium door of the inner archival safe. He slammed the release valve shut with his boot an instant before the world turned into blinding fire and deafening concussive pressure.
The blast hammered the reinforced alloy with the sound of a falling skyscraper. The shockwave rattled the teeth in Alexander’s skull, the sheer kinetic fury throwing him hard against the steel flooring, his body shielding Elena beneath him. Concrete dust and burning acrid chemicals hissed through the ventilation seams, filling the narrow chamber with choking grey mist.
For five agonizing seconds, neither of them moved. The floor beneath them shuddered violently as the upper elevator shaft collapsed, millions of pounds of pulverized debris sealing the vault’s primary entrance forever.
Elena pushed against Alexander’s chest, her breath coming in ragged, ragged gasps. Her cheek was cut from a flying fleck of molten steel, but her dark eyes burned with an icy, terrifying clarity.
"Leo," she choked out, her fingers digging into the collar of his tactical vest with superhuman strength. "Alexander, did you hear him? He’s on the line. They have him at the penthouse."
Alexander pushed himself up, blood trickling from his left ear where the concussive pressure had ruptured a capillary. He gripped her trembling shoulders, forcing her to look directly into his eyes. "He was calling through the penthouse relay, Elena, but the transmission had a dual-frequency echo. Julianna isn't in New York anymore. That voice on the radio said twelve thousand feet. They’re moving him to an extraction point."
"Then we don't have time to bleed," Elena said fiercely, wiping the blood from her cheek with the back of her wrist. She pushed herself to her feet, ignoring the bruises blooming beneath her dark clothes.
She turned to the central terminal of the inner archive—the only console that had survived the perimeter detonation. Julian Vance’s Master Cypher Key sat resting in the cradle, glowing with a soft, steady pulse of cerulean light.
Elena plugged her handheld decryption drive into the terminal's sub-port. Lines of complex, military-grade cryptographic code flashed across the screen in green ribbons.
"Julian Vance didn't just build a financial empire," Elena murmured, her voice steadying as her fingers flew across the mechanical keys. "He built a global kill-switch. Marcus Sterling and the Sovereign weren't trying to rob your family, Alexander. They were trying to erase the evidence of who actually funded your father's downfall twenty-five years ago."
A sharp ping resonated from the screen. A GPS coordinate materialized beneath an encrypted audio feed: *Sector 9 — Pier 42, Long Island Sound.*

And underneath it, an automated distress beacon tied to Leo’s biometric bracelet flashed an ominous amber warning: *Heart rate elevated. Location: In transit aboard airborne transport Alpha-Seven.*
"We have twenty minutes," Alexander said, chambering a round into his sidearm. "There's an old subterranean drainage tunnel behind this safe that leads to the East River culverts. Let's go get our son."
