Chapter 56 - Fractured Loyalties

"She survived?" Alexander asked, his voice like cracked ice. "The observation deck sheared off fifty feet above the Atlantic. The reactor exploded."

"Julianna had a secondary escape submersible pre-docked on the platform's northern pylon," Mercer stated, switching the tactical display to a satellite radar sweep of the North Sea. A single red signature was moving rapidly toward the Scandinavian coastline. "She was extracted six minutes before the primary detonation. And she is heading directly to the Citadel of Glass in Svalbard."

"The Sovereign Archives," Alexander recognized the location instantly from his father's encrypted journals. "The subterranean fortress where the physical master ledgers are kept."

"Yes," Mercer said. "Julianna possesses the counterfeit Sterling seal. If she reaches the inner sanctum before us and initiates the Sovereign Override, the system will assume the legitimate bloodline has been eradicated. The trust will execute Protocol Terminus—wiping all decentralized ledgers and transferring full executive authority to her faction."

Elena stood up from the bed, her face set in a look of cold, resolute fury Alexander had never seen in her before. Gone was the gentle, weary florist who had accepted a divorce settlement to escape the madness of high society. In her place stood a woman whose child had been marked for slaughter by the very empire that bore her name.

"How long until this vessel reaches Svalbard?" Elena asked, her voice steady, cutting through the hum of the ship.

Mercer looked at her, surprised by her sudden steel. "At maximum transit speed, fourteen hours."

"Then prepare whatever weapons you have," she commanded. "Because I am not running anymore. They took my identity, they tore my family apart, and they tried to murder my son. If Julianna wants a war for the Sterling legacy, I will give her one she cannot survive."

Alexander looked at her, his heart aching with an agonizing blend of guilt, admiration, and fierce love. He stepped beside her, placing his broad hand over hers on the edge of the bed.

"We do this together, Elena," he said quietly, his eyes dark with lethal resolve. "Three years ago, I walked away because I thought it was the only way to keep you safe. I was a fool. I will tear down every wall my father built before I let anyone touch you or Leo again."

Elena met his gaze, the unresolved pain of their three-year separation lingering between them, yet shadowed by the imminent threat to their child. "We survive this first, Alexander. Then we settle our own debts."
