Chapter 15 - The Hearth and the Truth

That evening, the temperature plunged far below freezing, and a dusting of snow began to settle over the slate roofs of the harbor. Against Gabriel’s vehement objections, Claire had invited Alexander to share dinner inside the cottage. She insisted that if they were to face the coming threat, they needed to speak without half-truths or corporate filters.

The cottage was warm, heated by a stone fireplace that crackled merrily in the living room. Leo sat in a wooden high chair beside the small dining table, happily mashing pieces of steamed carrots with his chubby hands.

Alexander sat opposite Claire, barely touching the beef stew she had prepared. His eyes drifted continuously toward Leo, a fierce, protective instinct swelling in his chest.

"Why did you leave the money, Alexander?" Claire asked suddenly, her spoon resting against the rim of her bowl. "A hundred and fifty million. You knew my father’s debts were already settled. You knew I had no desire to live in luxury."

Alexander set down his fork, his eyes meeting hers across the candlelit table. "Because I knew what my father was planning."

Gabriel, standing near the kitchen counter with his arms crossed, narrowed his eyes. "What does that mean?"

"Three years ago, Julianna didn't just come back into my life by accident," Alexander confessed, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "My father and hers had signed a secret pact years prior. A merger disguised as a marriage. My father threatened to destroy everything Claire's family had ever built—he held the promissory notes on your late father’s estate, Claire. He told me that if I didn't divorce you and marry Julianna, he would call in the debt and leave your mother destitute on the street."

Claire stared at him, her lips parting in shock. "My mother died believing our family was secure..."

"Because I bought those notes from my father before he could execute them," Alexander said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I traded my freedom for your safety. I paid the divorce settlement so you would have enough capital to disappear, to build a fortress where neither my father nor Julianna could ever reach you. But I was a coward, Claire. I let you believe I chose her over you, because I thought you would hate me enough to never look back."
