Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Dark

Deep within the subterranean levels of an abandoned industrial warehouse in Queens, away from the glittering towers of Manhattan, a dim red emergency bulb cast long, jagged shadows across a concrete floor. Several figures sat around a scarred metal table, their faces obscured by darkness. These were the secondary operatives of The Vanguard Group—the shadowy international syndicate that had backed Harrison Vance and Diana Caldwell in their bid to steal Project Prometheus.
"The operation in Manhattan has completely collapsed," a harsh, distorted voice echoed from a secure speakerphone mounted on the wall. The voice belonged to Victor Thorne, the elusive syndicate leader operating out of Zurich. "Harrison Vance is locked up, Diana Caldwell is singing like a canary to federal prosecutors, and Ellison’s security grid is now impregnable."
A tense silence fell over the room. One of the operatives, a ruthless cyber-mercenary known only as Kaelen, leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with malice.
"Vance and Caldwell failed because they relied on social engineering and fragile Hollywood vanity," Kaelen snarled, slamming his fist onto the metal table. "They underestimated Marcus Ellison. And worse, they let themselves get outsmarted by a three-year-old child."
"Do not underestimate the collateral damage that child caused," Thorne warned over the speaker. "Ellison has weaponized public sympathy and federal backing. If we try a direct digital breach or another corporate proxy takeover, the FBI will intercept us before we even touch their firewalls."

"Then we don't attack the firewall," Kaelen smiled coldly, a dark plan forming in his mind. "We attack what Ellison values most outside of his precious code. We target his human connections. We target the people who saved him—starting with that cleaning woman, Rosa, and her little girl."
The operatives murmured in agreement, their malicious plotting setting in motion a dark, dangerous chess game. They believed that by targeting the vulnerable domestic workers who had exposed them, they could break Marcus Ellison's ironclad resolve and force him to hand over Project Prometheus on their terms. They had no idea that Marcus had already anticipated their desperation, and was building a trap from which no criminal could escape.
