Chapter 3 - Shadows and Subterfuge

Within forty-eight hours of the disastrous engagement gala, the global media landscape was in a state of total structural meltdown. Headlines blazed across every major news network and social media platform: HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY EXPOSED AS CORPORATE SPY, and BILLIONAIRE MARCUS ELLISON AMBUSHED BY THREE-YEAR-OLD CHILD'S HEROIC DISCOVERY.
Diana Caldwell was sitting in a holding cell, her high-priced legal team scrambling to find any angle to keep her out of a federal penitentiary. The espionage rig recovered from beneath the Manhattan table had been handed over directly to federal cyber-crime investigators. Initial forensic analysis revealed that the device was not just an independent espionage tool—it was a master relay connected to an offshore black-market syndicate known as The Vanguard Group, an international consortium specializing in industrial sabotage and corporate extortion.
Back at Ellison Global Technologies headquarters, Marcus sat in his glass-walled executive suite overlooking the Manhattan skyline. The atmosphere was tense. His chief technology officer, Arthur Vance, stood by the massive digital display wall, scrolling through terrifyingly complex data logs.
"Boss," Arthur said grimly, tapping a holographic screen. "We dug deeper into the transmission logs from Diana’s rig before it was disconnected. The data packet it was uploading wasn't just corporate financials. It was the core architecture of our next-generation quantum encryption protocol—Project Prometheus."
Marcus narrowed his eyes. Project Prometheus was scheduled for public unveiling in three weeks. If it fell into enemy hands, Ellison Global would lose its monopoly on global cybersecurity, wiping out seventy percent of their market valuation overnight.
"Who was on the receiving end of that transmission?" Marcus asked, his voice low and dangerous.
"That's the terrifying part," Arthur replied, pulling up an encrypted tracking trace. "The signal didn't go to a competitor like Apex Corp. It routed through a series of dark-web proxy servers straight to an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands... owned by your own board chairman, Harrison Vance."
Marcus stared at the screen. Harrison Vance—not Arthur, despite the shared surname, but a ruthless, old-money investor who had helped fund Marcus’s early startup days. Harrison had always played the role of the benevolent mentor, but the digital footprints didn't lie. Harrison and Diana had been working together for over a year, using Diana’s high-society access to plant bugs, extract data, and systematically dismantle Ellison Global from the inside out.
Just then, the heavy oak doors of the executive suite swung open. Harrison Vance strode into the room, flanked by two corporate attorneys, wearing a calm, patrician smile that didn't reach his cold, calculating eyes.
"Marcus, my boy," Harrison said smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. "I heard about the absolute circus at your engagement party. Such a tragedy about Diana. But business waits for no man. The board is calling an emergency meeting in one hour to discuss your 'reckless management style' and the security vulnerabilities that allowed a domestic worker's child to disrupt a formal event."
Marcus slowly turned his executive chair around to face the older man. The expression on Marcus's face was chillingly serene.
"You're cutting it close, Harrison," Marcus said softly, standing up. "Stealing Project Prometheus through a disgraced Hollywood actress? I expected more subtlety from a man of your vintage."
Harrison’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second before returning with renewed arrogance. "You have no proof, Marcus. Just circumstantial paranoia. And by the end of the day, the board will vote to strip you of your CEO credentials due to 'mental instability' following the public humiliation of your failed engagement."
Marcus walked slowly toward his desk, picking up a secure tablet. "Proof? Harrison, when little Lily pointed under that table, she didn't just expose Diana. She triggered an automated network trap that Arthur and I built months ago when we first suspected a leak."

Marcus tapped the screen. Across the massive digital display wall, a live feed flashed active: a complete financial wire transfer record linking Harrison’s private offshore accounts directly to Diana Caldwell’s Swiss bank deposits, stamped with time-locked cryptographic hashes.
"Checkmate, Harrison," Marcus whispered.
