Chapter 2 - The Device of Ruin

Beneath the heavy white tablecloth, taped securely to the underside of the mahogany dining structure with industrial-grade black adhesive, was a sleek, matte-black electronic housing unit. A small, pulsing amber LED light blinked rhythmically, wired directly into a modified micro-router and a high-gain directional antenna pointed squarely at Marcus’s custom-built, offline terminal briefcase resting on the adjacent service cart.
The room erupted into collective gasps.
It was not a prank. It was a military-grade data interception and espionage rig—a localized sniffing device capable of cloning every encrypted biometric key, financial ledger, and proprietary algorithmic asset on Marcus’s private network within a three-minute window. And right beside the blinking module lay Diana’s discarded backup smartphone, its screen illuminated, displaying an active data-transfer progress bar reading: Syncing: 89% Complete.
Marcus stared at the device, then slowly rose to his full height. The temperature in the penthouse seemed to drop twenty degrees.
"Diana," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of any human warmth. "Care to explain why a multi-million-dollar corporate espionage router is wired into my private network from beneath your seat?"
Diana stumbled backward, her designer chair overturning and crashing loudly against the marble floor. The sophisticated, untouchable Hollywood icon had vanished, replaced by a cornered animal.
"It’s... it’s a misunderstanding!" Diana shrieked, her voice echoing off the high glass windows. She threw her hands out in frantic defense. "Marcus, someone planted that there! Someone is trying to frame me! You know how many enemies you have!"
"Enemies?" Marcus echoed coldly, stepping around the table. "The only person sitting in this exact seat for the last two hours was you, Diana. And more importantly, little Lily here saw you slide it out of your designer clutch and stick it to the frame just as the appetizer was served."
Gasps echoed through the crowd. Investors whispered frantically among themselves; board members hastily began packing their briefcases, realizing the catastrophic security breach unfolding before their eyes.
Rosa clutched Lily tightly to her chest, tears streaming down her face as she backed away toward the kitchen doors. She had only wanted an honest job to support her daughter after her husband passed away, and now she had inadvertently blown the lid off a massive criminal conspiracy involving one of the most famous women on the planet.
"Guards," Marcus commanded, his voice slicing through the chaos like a razor.
Two massive private security operatives materialized instantly from the perimeter doors, blocking all exits.
"Don't touch me!" Diana screamed, her glamorous facade completely shattered as her mascara ran down her cheeks. She pointed a trembling finger at Marcus, her tone shifting from pleading to venomous. "You arrogant bastard! You think you're untouchable? You think your algorithms make you a god? You stole everything you have, Marcus! You crushed everyone who stood in your way, and I was just the one smart enough to cash in on your inevitable fall!"
The confession hung heavy in the air. Sixty witnesses had heard every single word. The live-stream cameras embedded in the penthouse security system—automatically recording the engagement gala for public relations archives—had captured the entire outburst in pristine high-definition audio and video.
Marcus didn't flinch. He simply looked down at the tiny toddler standing beside him in pink socks, still clutching her ragged stuffed rabbit.
"Thank you, Miss Lily," Marcus said quietly, a genuine, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth. "You just saved my entire company."
Lily blinked up at him, entirely unaware of the billions of dollars she had just protected, and simply offered a toothy grin. "Can I have some chocolate cake now, mister?"

Marcus laughed—a rich, booming sound that signaled not defeat, but absolute liberation. "Rosa," he called out to the trembling housekeeper. "Take Lily to the private kitchen. Order whatever she wants. And consider yourself and your daughter set for life."
As security escorted a screaming, hysterical Diana Caldwell out of the penthouse in handcuffs, Marcus realized that the greatest wealth he possessed wasn't his technology, his empire, or his money—it was the pure, uncorrupted truth delivered by a three-year-old child. But little did Marcus know, Diana was merely a pawn in a much darker, far more dangerous corporate war that had only just begun.
