Chapter 48 - Antidote and Ash

The descent from the Romanov Consulate was a running hurricane of gunfire, shattering glass, and screaming sirens.

Ethan moved down the grand marble staircase, his broad body forming an impenetrable human shield around Nikolai, while Maria laid down lethal suppressing fire, clearing the grand foyer of three heavily armored Romanov shock-troopers.

They burst through the heavy mahogany front doors just as three black armored Hawthorne SUVs screeched onto the sidewalk, tires smoking against the curb. Marcus kicked open the rear door of the lead Suburban, laying down covering fire with a customized assault rifle that drove the surviving consulate guards back behind the limestone pillars.

"Get in! Get in!" Marcus bellowed.

Ethan threw himself into the back seat, cradling Nikolai against his chest, while Maria dived in beside him, slamming the heavy ballistic door shut.

*CLANG-CLANG-CLANG.*

A hail of high-caliber rounds peppered the armored vehicle's glass, spiderwebbing the surface but failing to penetrate. The convoy accelerated violently, roaring through the blacked-out streets of Manhattan toward the safety of the Hudson Valley.

Inside the rear cabin, Dr. Patel was already waiting, his medical instruments laid out on a sterile tray secured to the bulkhead.

"Get the catalyst open!" Patel ordered, tearing open Nikolai’s woolen coat.

The countdown on the console flashed with terrifying urgency:

**01 HOUR : 12 MINUTES : 08 SECONDS.**

Nikolai’s breathing had deteriorated into shallow, rattling gasps. His lips were turning a faint, terrifying shade of blue, and his pupils were dilated to the edge of the iris.

Maria placed the silver refrigeration case on the medical tray, entering the override sequence Ethan had extracted from the consulate's primary terminal. The pneumatic seal hissed open, revealing a single glass ampoule filled with a luminescent golden liquid.

Patel loaded the liquid into a high-pressure automated syringe. "Hold his legs, Ethan! This reaction will be violent!"

Ethan pinned his son's small legs, his heart tearing in two as Nikolai let out a weak, agonizing whimper. "Be brave, Nikolai. Daddy's right here. Hold on to me."

Patel drove the needle directly into the central line in Nikolai's neck and depressed the plunger.

For five agonizing seconds, nothing happened.

Then, Nikolai’s back arched off the stretcher. His small hands clenched into rigid fists, his teeth grinding together as the antidote engaged in a brutal cellular war with the Novichok neurotoxin. A high-pitched, strangled scream tore from his throat.

"Nikolai!" Maria cried, leaning over him, wiping the cold, foaming sweat from his forehead with a sterile gauze.

The heart monitor connected to his chest screamed in a continuous, erratic rhythm: *BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEEEEP—*

The line went completely flat.

"Asystole!" Patel yelled, grabbing the pediatric defibrillator paddles. "Charging to fifty joules! Clear!"

"No! NO!" Ethan roared, leaning over his son, pressing his bare forehead against the child's feverish brow. "Nikolai, look at me! Fight it! You are a Hawthorne! You do not die here!"

*THUMP.*

The shock jolted the boy’s tiny frame off the bed.

The flatline continued. The dreadful electronic drone filled the speeding Suburban like a funeral dirge.

"Charging to seventy-five!" Patel shouted. "Clear!"

*THUMP.*

Silence hung in the vehicle for two suffocating seconds.

Then, a faint, ragged cough broke through the silence.

*Beep... beep... beep...*

The monitor caught a rhythm. Slow, weak, but undeniably steady.

Nikolai’s eyelids fluttered open. The violent purple hue under his eyes had begun to recede. He looked up, his gaze sweeping over the sterile lights, past Maria’s tear-stained face, and finally resting on Ethan’s bloody, battered features.

"Papa..." Nikolai whispered, his voice fragile as spun glass. "The wolf is gone."

Ethan buried his face in his son's chest, his shoulders shaking with silent, heaving sobs of overwhelming relief, while Maria wrapped her arms around them both.

They had crossed through the gates of hell. They had stolen their boy back from the grave.

But five miles ahead, the night sky over the Hudson Valley suddenly ignited in a horrific wall of orange flame.

Marcus slammed his fists against the steering wheel. "Boss! Look at the surveillance feed from the estate! God help us... look at the estate!"
