Chapter 35 - The Chamber of Frozen Sins

The central laboratory was a cathedral of steel and glass, dominated by a circular catwalk suspended over a geothermal ventilation shaft. Huge cryogenic vats lined the perimeter, their glass windows frosted over with thick coats of white ice.
In the center of the room, illuminated by a solitary spotlight, stood the primary preservation cylinder.
Inside, floating in amber suspension gel, was Caroline Hawthorne.
Her chestnut hair drifted around her pale shoulders like seaweed. Tubes ran into her carotid artery and wrists, feeding her a continuous cocktail of neuro-protective chemicals and synthetic nutrients. Her eyelids were fluttering violently beneath the clear skin—she was trapped in the twilight between a medically induced coma and agonizing consciousness.
Standing on the catwalk directly before Caroline’s pod was Vanessa Sterling.
Vanessa looked like an apparition of madness. Her high-society elegance was gone; her designer trench coat was splattered with mud and guard blood, her blonde hair matted, her face gaunt and shadowed by an obsession that had devoured her sanity.
In her gloved hands, she held a handheld remote detonator wired directly to the base of Caroline’s life-support canister.
"Did you really think you could erase me, Ethan?" Vanessa’s voice echoed across the massive chamber, shrill and vibrating with hysteria.
Ethan stepped onto the metal grating of the catwalk, fifteen yards away. Maria fanned out to the left flank, moving silently along the shadow of the cooling towers, her weapon leveled at Vanessa’s skull.
"Put the detonator down, Vanessa," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm, his pistol lowered at his side. He didn't want to risk a stray shot hitting the explosive charge or the fragile glass of the tank. "It’s over. Thomas is dead. My father has Sophie. You’re holding a dead hand."
Vanessa threw her head back and laughed—a sound that was pure venom. "You think I give a damn about your father’s empire? You think I cared about Thomas? Alexander promised me I would be the queen of the Hawthorne dynasty! He told me all I had to do was break that little brat Sophie until she was pliable, until she became a blank slate for the Syndicate's next generation!"
She pointed a shaking, manicured finger at the tank behind her.
"And then I found out *why* he kept her alive!" Vanessa shrieked. "Look at her, Ethan! Look at your precious, saintly wife! She wasn't an innocent civilian caught in the crossfire! She was Alexander’s chief geneticist! She designed the neuro-lock that secures the Hawthorne offshore treasury! Sophie isn't just your daughter—she’s the only human key capable of unlocking three hundred billion dollars in bearer assets!"
Ethan’s world fractured again. He looked at Caroline through the frosted glass.
*A geneticist?*
Caroline had told him she was an art curator. She had spent her days painting water lilies in their home in Boston, playing piano, baking pastries with Sophie. It was all a constructed identity. A gilded cage within a gilded cage.
"And when she tried to run away with you... when she tried to take the child and hide in your naive little world," Vanessa snarled, her thumb resting on the red toggle switch of the detonator, "Alexander staged the crash. He harvested her brain patterns to complete the algorithm. And now... now Alexander doesn't need me anymore. He sent an extermination team to my safehouse in Lisbon. So if I'm going to hell, Ethan... your ghost is coming with me!"
Vanessa’s thumb plunged down on the toggle.
*BANG!*
A single, suppressed round tore through Vanessa’s right shoulder. Maria had fired from the shadows.
The impact twisted Vanessa around, the detonator flying from her hand and skittering across the metal grating toward the edge of the geothermal shaft.
Vanessa screamed, lunging for the fallen device with her left hand.
Ethan closed the distance in three explosive strides. He caught Vanessa by the throat, lifting her bodily off the catwalk and slamming her against the steel railing above the five-hundred-foot drop into the boiling volcanic vent below.
"You touched my daughter," Ethan growled into her face, his fingers tightening like hydraulic clamps around her windpipe. "You threw her to the ground. You made her silent for a year."
Vanessa gasped for air, her eyes bulging with terror as she looked down into the fiery abyss beneath her dangling feet. "Ethan... please... I loved you... I only wanted... to give you... an heir..."
"Sophie is my only heir," Ethan whispered. "And Maria is her mother."
He opened his hand.

Vanessa’s scream fell down the shaft, swallowed by the roar of the geothermal steam until there was only the metallic *clink* of her body hitting the bedrock far below.
