Chapter 39 - The Blood of the Sovereign

The bronze-studded doors of the crypt did not open—they exploded inward under the concussive force of two breaching charges.
Smoke and blinding white tactical flash poured into the cavernous hall.
Through the haze walked Ethan Hawthorne.
He was a nightmare sculpted from black Kevlar and absolute vengeance. A Benelli M4 combat shotgun rested in his right hand, cycling high-impact slugs with rhythmic, devastating efficiency. Every time the shotgun roared, a Praetorian guard in the shadows of the pillars dropped to the stone floor, their armor pulverized by the point-blank kinetic force.
Beside him, moving with the fluid lethality of a shadow, was Maria.
She held twin suppressed submachine guns, laying down overlapping fields of suppression fire that pinned the High Council guards behind the marble tombs. She moved from cover to cover, her face stone-cold, her eyes tracking only one objective: the little girl tied to the chair on the dais.
"ETHAN!" Alexander bellowed, his voice carrying over the din of battle. The old man grabbed Sophie by the hair, dragging the little girl back against his chest, pressing the razor-sharp edge of the Damascus dagger against her small, fragile throat. "STOP! One more step, and I open her jugular!"
The gunfire ceased instantly.
The smoke drifted toward the high ceiling. The remaining Council members stood trembling against the walls, realizing that the man standing before them was not a rebellious prince, but a sovereign who had come to burn their world to the ground.
Ethan lowered the shotgun to his side. His face was streaked with soot and blood, but his eyes were fixed on the blade touching his daughter's neck.
"Let her go, Father," Ethan said. The silence between his words was more terrifying than the gunfire. "This is between you and me."
"It was never between you and me, Ethan!" Alexander shouted, his composure slipping, madness bleeding through his aristocratic veneer. "You were an anomaly! A flaw in my design! You chose love over power! You chose a family over the crown! Look at you... bringing this common servant, this nanny into my sanctuary!"
"She is not a servant," Ethan said softly. "She is the woman who showed my daughter what a real family looks like."
"Daddy!" Sophie cried, tears finally breaking through her defiance as she saw Ethan’s face. "Daddy, help me!"
"Close your eyes, Sophie," Maria’s voice rang out from the shadows of the left colonnade. It was soft, gentle, the exact voice she had used when tucking the little girl into bed at night. "Close your eyes, baby. Count to three."
Sophie squeezed her eyes shut. "One... two..."
Alexander sneered, his grip on the dagger tightening. "You think you can shoot me before I cut her? There is no angle! I am covered by her—"
*CRACK!*
The shot did not come from Maria. It did not come from Ethan.
It came from the high balcony above the crypt—the old choir loft overlooking the altar.
The high-caliber round from a Barrett .50 sniper rifle shattered the stone pillar six inches from Alexander’s head, showering him with sharp granite splinters that slashed across his face, blinding him in his left eye.
Alexander screamed, staggering backward, his grip on Sophie slipping.
In that half-second of disruption, Ethan moved with the speed of striking lightning.
He crossed the twenty feet of open stone in a single heartbeat. His left hand clamped around his father’s wrist, twisting the Damascus dagger away with a sickening crunch of breaking bone. His right fist drove into the old man's jaw, sending Alexander crashing down onto the stone steps of the altar.
Maria was already there. She threw herself over Sophie, severing the gold silk cords with her combat knife, lifting the little girl into her arms, pressing Sophie’s face against her neck, shielding her body from the carnage.
"I have you, baby. I have you. You’re safe," Maria whispered through her own tears, rocking the trembling child.
Ethan stood over his father.
Alexander lay broken on the altar steps, spitting blood and teeth, looking up into the face of his son. The old man tried to reach for the fallen dagger, but Ethan brought his heavy tactical boot down on Alexander’s hand, crushing the fingers into the stone.
"You built an empire on lies, Father," Ethan said, looking down with neither hatred nor mercy—only the cold, final judgment of a king. "You took Caroline. You tried to break my child. You tried to replace my family with monsters."
Alexander choked out a bloody laugh. "Kill me then, Ethan... become what I made you... become the beast..."
"No," Ethan said coldly, raising the Benelli M4, aiming the barrel directly between his father's eyes. "I am not what you made me. I am what I chose to become."
*BOOM.*

The gunshot echoed into the depths of the catacombs, putting an end to thirty years of shadow rule.
