Chapter 37 - The Midnight Altar

The revelation struck the concrete chamber like an atmospheric bomb.

Ethan stared down at Caroline, his mind racing through every fragmented memory of his early marriage. The secrecy. The unlisted foreign bank accounts. The way his father had looked at baby Sophie the day she was brought home from the private clinic in Geneva—not with love, but with a cold, predatory fascination, like an archaeologist who had just unearthed the crown of an ancient king.

"My father wiped out the Romanov branch in 1994," Ethan whispered, his knuckles cracking as his hands closed into fists. "He told the Council it was a turf war over the Mediterranean shipping lanes."

"It was a purge," Caroline gasped, her strength failing rapidly as the hypothermia fought against the warming blanket Maria had secured around her. "The Romanovs held the Golden Charter—the founding charter that granted sovereign immunity and total control over the private clearinghouses in Zurich and Singapore. Your father couldn't claim the throne without their direct genetic line. So he kept me... he forced me to engineer the lineage... to use their archived genetic profile to create a child."

"Sophie," Maria breathed, her face white with horror. "He didn't just want an heir. He created a sacrificial lamb to legitimize a stolen crown."

"Where is the Council meeting, Caroline?" Ethan demanded, his voice dropping into an icy register that signaled the awakening of the Hawthorne sovereign. "Where does Alexander hold the ritual?"

"The... The Catacombs of Saint Patrick’s... old foundation," Caroline wheezed, her head lolling back against Ethan’s shoulder. "Under the private chapel... on his estate in the Hudson Valley. Midnight... when the solstice begins. If the bloodline isn't ratified before the clock strikes twelve... the charter defaults to the surviving blood... Sophie."

Maria checked her wrist chronometer. "It’s 05:40 AM Azores time. That gives us less than six hours to fly across the Atlantic, penetrate the most heavily fortified private compound in North America, and stop a madman with an army of private mercenaries."

"Marcus!" Ethan spoke into his collar comms.

"I'm here, Boss," Marcus’s voice crackled through the static-laced channel from the transport plane circling five miles offshore. "I heard everything through the biometric relay. I’ve already alerted our loyalist units in New Jersey and Long Island. We have thirty-two former Delta and Navy SEAL operators mobilizing at Teterboro Airport right now. But Boss... the Hudson Valley estate is protected by the *Praetorian Group*. Two hundred elite PMCs with heavy armor and surface-to-air missile batteries. A direct frontal assault is suicide."

"Then we don't commit a frontal assault," Ethan said coldly. He looked down at Caroline. "Maria, can she survive the flight?"

Maria checked the IV lines, her fingers pressing into Caroline’s pulse point. "I’ve stabilized her core temperature. She needs hospital-grade plasma and hyperbaric therapy, but she will live. Ethan... she can't fight."

"She won't have to," Ethan said. He scooped Caroline up into his arms, carrying her like a wounded child across the wet catwalk toward the extraction lift. "Caroline will stay with Marcus at twenty thousand feet. You and I are going into the Hudson Valley."

Maria loaded a fresh magazine into her MP7, the bolt slamming forward with a sharp, mechanical *CLACK*.

"I held that little girl while she learned how to speak again," Maria said, her eyes burning with maternal fury that rivaled Ethan’s own dark sovereign wrath. "I watched her take her first steps without fear after Vanessa tried to break her. If Alexander Hawthorne thinks he can lay his filthy hands on my daughter's throat... I will burn that cathedral down around his ears."

Ethan looked at Maria. In that moment, he saw no distinction between the quiet nanny who had entered his house a year ago and the queen standing beside him in the blood-stained bunker. She was his equal. His executioner. The mother of his house.

"Let’s go kill a king," Ethan said.
