Chapter 38 - The Hudson Valley Siege

11:15 PM. Eastern Standard Time.

Rain fell in torrential sheets over the Hudson Valley, turning the hundred-acre estate of Alexander Hawthorne into a fortress of mud and iron.

Towering wrought-iron gates bearing the crest of the Hawthorne hawk stood sealed beneath the surveillance of infrared camera towers and patrolling German Shepherds. Beyond the perimeter wall, the private estate sprawled over three miles of private woodland, terminating at the edge of a jagged granite bluff where a private stone cathedral had stood since 1912.

Beneath the church, in the ancient stone crypts carved directly into the bedrock, candles flickered in the damp draft.

Twelve men in dark velvet suits sat along an obsidian table. They were the High Council of the Syndicate—the hidden lords of European finance, arms manufacturing, and global shadow-logistics. They spoke in hushed, ancient tones, their eyes locked on the elevated dais at the end of the crypt.

On the dais, sitting on a high-backed wooden chair, was Sophie.

The little girl was dressed in a traditional white ceremonial gown. Her small hands were tied to the armrests with gold silk cord. She did not cry. Her face was smudged with dust, her breathing small and quiet, but her eyes—large, luminous, and terrifyingly clear—were locked on the man standing before her.

Alexander Hawthorne was dressed in the ceremonial robes of the Grand Sovereign. In his hands, he held an antique Damascus steel dagger, its blade etched with the double-headed eagle of the imperial line.

"Do not look at me with those eyes, child," Alexander said softly, his voice echoing off the vaulted stone ceiling. "You should be honored. Your short life was engineered for this very hour. Through your blood, the Hawthorne name becomes eternal."

Sophie stared at him. She did not flinch. "My daddy is coming," she whispered. Her voice was small, but it cut through the silence of the crypt like a diamond through glass. "And my mama is going to kill you."

Alexander chuckled, a dry, rattling sound. "Your mother is frozen in an unmarked bunker in the sea, Sophie. And your father is currently swimming with the sharks at the bottom of the Atlantic."

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the crypt shook.

*BOOM!*

A shockwave reverberated through the stone floor, extinguishing half the candles. Dust rained down from the ancient arches.

The High Council members jumped to their feet, reaching inside their tailored jackets for concealed weapons.

Alexander frowned, his eyes narrowing toward the reinforced iron entrance. "Captain! Report!"

The comms radio on his belt crackled with static, followed by the sound of deafening gunfire, the distinct, thunderous roar of .50 caliber sniper fire, and the hysterical screams of seasoned mercenaries:

*"—THEY’RE IN THE PERIMETER! IT’S ETHAN! HE HAS REINFORCEMENTS! THE PERIMETER IS GONE! THE ENTIRE WEST GATE IS—"*

*BANG!*

A gunshot ended the transmission.

Alexander’s face hardened into a mask of pure, murderous rage. "Impossible. He died on the Leviathan."

May you like

"I told you," Sophie whispered from her chair, a faint, defiant smile spreading across her small lips. "My daddy is here."
