Chapter 45 - The Countess’s Ultimatum

The war room in the basement of the Hawthorne estate was bathed in a blood-red emergency glow.
Dr. Kenneth Patel, the Hawthorne syndicate’s chief trauma surgeon and toxicologist, stood over the digital mass spectrometer analyzing the trace residue Ethan had scraped from the discarded pneumatic injector on the Brooklyn rooftop.
On the main central display, a countdown timer glowed with merciless clarity:
**68 HOURS : 14 MINUTES : 22 SECONDS.**
Maria stood behind Ethan, her hands firmly planted on his tense shoulders. Ethan had not spoken a word since they returned. He sat at the glass table, his fists clenched, staring at the chemical breakdown of the venom circulating through his four-year-old son's veins.
"It’s a customized variant of Novichok mixed with a slow-release peptide," Dr. Patel said, his voice grim. "It bypasses the blood-brain barrier. In sixty-eight hours, Nikolai will lose motor function. At seventy hours, his lungs will cease voluntary contractions. At seventy-two... irreversible cardiac arrest."
"Can we synthesize it?" Maria asked, her voice steady despite the horror.
"Not in sixty-eight hours," Patel answered, shaking his head. "It requires an ultra-rare enzyme derived from a bioluminescent deep-sea coral farmed exclusively by Russian state laboratories. Without the master formula and the stabilizing catalyst, any synthetic attempt by us will kill the child instantly."
Suddenly, the red landline in the center of the console began to ring.
It wasn't a secure line. It was an open, unencrypted frequency routed directly through the Russian Consulate in Midtown Manhattan.
Ethan reached out and hit the speaker button. "Speak."
*"Have you looked at your daughter today, Ethan?"* Katerina Romanova’s voice sounded crystal clear, echoing off the concrete walls of the command bunker. *"She looks so peaceful in her white lace dress. Just like Caroline did before the madness consumed her."*
Ethan leaned forward, his knuckles cracking. "If Nikolai dies, Katerina, there is no corner of this earth where you can hide. I will dismantle the Romanov name until not even the dust remembers you existed."
*"Save your theatrical fury for your foot soldiers, Hawthorne,"* Katerina dismissed him with icy contempt. *"Nikolai is currently resting in the penthouse suite of the Romanov Consulate on 67th Street. He is weak. He asks for his mother. But his mother is in a grave in the Hudson Valley."*
"What do you want?" Ethan demanded.
*"A trade,"* the Countess replied smoothly. *"Tomorrow evening at midnight, during the Winter Solstice Gala at the Metropolitan Opera House. You will walk through the front doors holding Sophie’s hand. You will transfer full legal guardianship and the biometric codes to Caroline’s European trust funds to my proxies. In return, I will hand you the vial containing the catalyst, and your boy will be delivered to the steps outside."*
"And if I refuse?"
*"Then at 12:01 AM, Nikolai will stop breathing,"* Katerina said coldly. *"And you will spend the rest of your miserable life looking at Sophie, knowing that you sacrificed her twin brother to keep your petty criminal empire intact. Choose wisely, Ethan. The blood of kings does not negotiate with American upstarts."*
The line went dead.
Ethan slammed his fist down onto the reinforced glass table, shattering the upper laminate layer into a spiderweb of cracks.
"She wants to destroy both children," Maria said, stepping around the table until she stood inches from Ethan's face. "If she gets Sophie, she eliminates the Hawthorne claim forever. If she lets Nikolai die, she punishes you for Caroline's death. She has no intention of honoring that trade."
Ethan looked up, his dark eyes burning with absolute, uncompromising lethality. "Then we don't trade."
Maria’s eyebrows rose slightly. "What do you propose?"
"The Romanov Consulate is sovereign Russian territory," Ethan said, rising from his chair. "A fortress protected by diplomatic immunity, thirty private spetsnaz mercenaries, and reinforced steel-core ballistic glass. The NYPD cannot touch it. The FBI won't touch it."
Ethan turned to Marcus, who stood by the armory door. "Marcus. Bring up the architectural schematics of the 67th Street consulate."
"Boss?" Marcus asked, his jaw dropping. "You're talking about invading a foreign diplomatic mission on American soil. That’s an act of war. The entire federal government will hunt us down."
Ethan looked toward the nursery monitor on the far wall, where Sophie slept peacefully, clutching the plush bear Maria had given her.
May you like
"Let them hunt," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm. "My son is inside that glass tower, dying by the minute. Tonight, the Hawthorne Syndicate goes to war with an Empire."
