Chapter 47 - The Broken Blade

The cut on Ethan’s forearm was deep, the dark arterial blood pooling on the fine linen sheets, but he didn't even flinch. He didn't raise his weapon. He didn't retreat.
In the doorway, Maria raised her rifle, her eyes widening in shock. "Ethan!"
"Hold fire, Maria!" Ethan commanded, his voice raw, commanding, yet profoundly gentle. "Nobody touches him!"
Nikolai held the bloody ceramic blade in both trembling hands, breathing in ragged, shallow gasps. The toxic fever was turning his skin an ashen gray, and dark purple circles bruised the hollows beneath his eyes. Yet the discipline drilled into him by the Romanov handlers forced him to keep the blade pointed straight at Ethan’s throat.
"Grandmother said you would come like a thief," Nikolai wept, angry tears spilling down his pale cheeks. "She said you would whisper sweet lies to take my crown! You are the wolf! You murdered Caroline!"
Ethan looked at the ceramic blade. Then, slowly, deliberately, he reached out with his bare, uninjured hand and gripped the sharp edge of the blade directly in his palm.
Nikolai froze, his breath catching in his throat.
Ethan pulled the blade closer, pressing the point directly over his own heart. Blood welled between Ethan’s fingers, dripping down his knuckles, but his eyes never left Nikolai’s.
"Feel that," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with a father's unspeakable agony. "Feel my heart, Nikolai. Is that the heart of a wolf?"
Nikolai’s small hands trembled violently. The blade shook against Ethan’s chest.
"Your mother loved you more than her own life," Ethan spoke, each word heavy with absolute truth. "When they stole you from her womb, it broke her soul. She spent every day of her life looking for you in the shadows. And when she died... she died trying to protect your sister Sophie from the very monsters who put that knife in your hands."
"Liar..." Nikolai whimpered, but the conviction in his voice was crumbling, swallowed by the sheer, undeniable reality of his father's bleeding sacrifice.
"I didn't abandon you, Nikolai," Ethan whispered, tears finally escaping his eyes. "They took you. They hid you across the ocean. But I am here now. And I will let you carve my heart out of my chest before I let them take you again."
Nikolai’s grip loosened.
The ceramic knife slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the bloody sheets.
The boy’s small shoulders shook violently. The terrifying mask of the child assassin collapsed, leaving behind nothing more than a broken, poisoned four-year-old boy who had never known a father's touch.
Nikolai threw his small arms around Ethan’s neck, burying his face into Ethan’s Kevlar vest, sobbing with a depth of despair that shattered the silence of the room.
"Papa... it hurts," the boy cried, his body convulsing in the grip of the spreading neurotoxin. "My chest... it hurts so bad..."
Ethan wrapped his powerful arms around his son, pulling him against his chest with a fierce, unbreakable grip, ignoring the pain in his bleeding hand and arm. "I know, baby. I know. Daddy's here. You're safe now."
"Ethan!" Maria called out urgently from the door. "Consulate alarms have triggered! Heavy reinforcements approaching from the lower levels! We have the catalyst! We have to move NOW!"
Ethan scooped Nikolai up in his left arm, holding him tight against his chest, while Maria grabbed the refrigeration case containing the antidote.

Ethan drew his Kimber with his bloody right hand. "Let them come," Ethan snarled, his eyes igniting with lethal majesty. "We're going home."
