Chapter 36 - Two Mothers, One Sovereign

*[CRITICAL: PURGE TIMER REACHED 00:03:00. LIQUID NITROGEN FLUSH INEVITABLE. COMMENCING PRESSURE DRAIN.]*
The computerized voice shattered the brief silence. Inside the cylinder, Caroline’s body arched violently. The amber gel was draining rapidly from the bottom of the tank, replaced by swirling plumes of super-cooled nitrogen gas that began frosting the glass at terrifying speed.
"Ethan! The drainage valve!" Maria shouted, rushing to the master console. She pulled a tactical combat knife from her vest, driving the blade between the housing of the automated override switch, trying to short-circuit the relay. "The panel is encrypted with biometric authorization! It requires Hawthorne blood!"
Ethan didn't hesitate. He raised his combat knife, slashed his own left palm open from heel to thumb, and slammed his bleeding hand against the glass scanner.
The console blared a harsh tone: *[BIOMETRIC RECOGNIZED: HAWTHORNE, ETHAN. EMERGENCY RELEASE AUTHORIZED.]*
The explosive release bolts on the preservation chamber detonated with a deafening crack.
The heavy glass cylinder hissed upward. Hundreds of gallons of freezing suspension fluid cascaded across the metal catwalk, soaking Ethan and Maria.
Ethan lunged forward, catching Caroline’s limp, naked form before she hit the steel floor.
She was as cold as a marble statue. Her skin was translucent, blue veins spider-webbing across her pale cheeks. Her lips were blue, her breathing shallow, rattling in her chest like dry leaves.
"Get the thermal blanket from my pack!" Ethan barked, falling to his knees, cradling his first wife against his chest, ripping the respirator tubes from her mouth and throat. "Caroline! Caroline, look at me! Breathe!"
Maria knelt beside them without a second of hesitation. There was no jealousy in her eyes; there was no hesitation. She wrapped the emergency silver foil around Caroline’s shivering shoulders, her hands immediately moving to check Caroline’s carotid pulse and airway.
"Her pulse is thready, eighty beats per minute, severe hypothermia," Maria reported clinically, her voice steady despite the madness around them. "We need to elevate her legs and push epinephrine or her heart will enter ventricular fibrillation!"
Caroline’s eyelids twitched.
Slowly, agonizingly, her hazel eyes—the exact same eyes as Sophie’s—opened.
She looked up. Her vision took seconds to focus through the layers of chemical fog that had clouded her mind for over seven hundred days.
"E... Ethan?" Her voice was a cracked, broken rasp.
"I'm here, Caroline. You’re safe," Ethan said, his voice breaking for the first time in his adult life. "You’re out. I'm taking you home."
Caroline’s shaking, ice-cold hand reached up, her frail fingers touching Ethan’s cheek, tracing the scar along his jaw. But then her eyes shifted.
She saw Maria kneeling beside them, holding the IV line, her hands bloody and covered in gunpowder residue.
Caroline looked between Ethan and Maria. A profound, heartbreaking awareness flashed in the depths of her eyes. She saw the matching silver wedding band on Maria’s finger. She saw the fierce, protective love in Maria’s gaze.
"The... the nanny..." Caroline whispered, a faint, tragic smile touching her blue lips. "The one... who held my baby... when she was crying by the pool..."
"She saved Sophie, Caroline," Ethan whispered, his hand covering Caroline’s frozen fingers. "She protected her from the monsters."
Caroline turned her head toward Maria. With an effort that seemed to drain the last ounce of her soul’s energy, she reached out her other hand, weakly clutching Maria’s wrist.
"Thank you..." Caroline wept, tears of pure gratitude carving paths through the frost on her cheeks. "You... you were her mother... when I was dead..."
Maria’s eyes welled with tears, but she held Caroline’s gaze firmly, squeezing her hand with absolute warmth. "Sophie is safe, Caroline. And we are going to bring her home together."
Caroline’s grip suddenly tightened with surprising, desperate strength. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror.
"No... you don't understand..." Caroline coughed, blood flecking her lips as she struggled to pull Ethan closer. "Alexander didn't take Sophie... to inherit the money... He took her... because Sophie isn't his granddaughter."
Ethan froze. "What did you say?"
Caroline looked directly into Ethan’s soul, her words dropping like an executioner’s axe.

"Sophie... was created from the bloodline of the Romanov Syndicate... the family your father slaughtered thirty years ago to build his empire. Sophie is the rightful heir to the entire global syndicate treaty. If Alexander kills her on the altar of the High Council at midnight... he becomes untouchable by international law forever!"
