Chapter 42 - The Echo of Caroline’s Stolen Womb

The rain began to hammer the asphalt of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway like shrapnel as Ethan’s armored convoy surged through the gray midday gloom.
Inside the back of the reinforced Suburban, Maria sat with a rugged tactical tablet, tearing through Caroline Sterling’s decrypted medical archives recovered from the Swiss bank vault. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing three layers of biometric encryption that Alexander had thought buried forever.
"Here," Maria said suddenly, angling the screen toward Ethan. "Zurich, May 14th, four years ago. Caroline’s attending physician was Dr. Klaus Vance."
"Vance committed suicide three days after Sophie’s birth," Ethan said, his hands clenched tightly over his weapon. "Drowned in Lake Lucerne."
"No," Maria countered, pulling up a coroner's forensic ledger from a buried Russian darknet server. "The body pulled from Lake Lucerne had no dental matches. Vance didn't drown. He was extracted to St. Petersburg under the alias Viktor Rostov. And look who authorized his monthly wire transfers of half a million euros."
Ethan leaned forward. The screen displayed a signature stamped in wax: *The Grand Duchess Katerina Romanova.*
The name struck Ethan like a physical blow. Katerina Romanova was Caroline’s maternal grandmother—the matriarch of the fallen imperial dynasty’s most ruthless criminal syndicate in Western Europe. A woman who believed that the Romanov blood was sacred, destined to reclaim sovereign rule over the underworld, untainted by American corporate blood.
"Katerina despised me," Ethan muttered, memories flashing through his mind like lightning strikes. "When I married Caroline, Katerina declared our union a desecration. She refused to attend the wedding. She swore that no Hawthorne would ever command Romanov blood."
"She didn't just want to punish you," Maria analyzed, her tactical mind dissecting the enemy’s grand strategy. "She wanted the bloodline without the father. She bribed or terrified Caroline’s doctors. When Caroline went into labor under general anesthesia due to placental rupture, they took the male twin first. They branded him as dead, spirited him through an underground tunnel beneath the clinic, and left you with Sophie because they deemed a female heir useless for their imperial revival."
"And Caroline?" Ethan’s voice trembled with a terrifying mix of grief and fury. "Did Caroline know?"
Maria scrolled down to a final, sealed audio file recovered from Dr. Vance's private safe. She tapped play.
The recording was crackling and distorted, but the frantic, agonized weeping of Caroline Hawthorne echoed through the armored vehicle:
*"...Give him back! I heard him cry! I heard my baby boy cry before you put the mask on me! Klaus, where is my son?! Where did Katerina take my son?! If you hurt Ethan... if you hurt my children, I will burn the Romanov vault to the ground..."*
A gunshot cracked through the audio recording, followed by a sickening thud, and then the icy, aristocratic voice of an elderly woman:
*"Silence her. Administer the amnesia neurotoxin. She will remember only one child. The boy belongs to the Empire."*
The recording cut to static.
Inside the Suburban, the air went completely dead.
Ethan slowly lowered his head, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the steering wheel so hard the leather cracked. Caroline hadn't been weak. She hadn't been unstable. She had been chemically butchered and terrorized by her own grandmother to conceal the kidnapping of Ethan’s firstborn son.
"His name," Ethan whispered, the words coated in venom and sorrow. "What did they name him?"
Maria looked at the bottom of the encrypted Romanov dossier.
May you like
"Nikolai," Maria said softly. "They named him Nikolai Romanov. And according to this file... Katerina has spent the last four years training him to kill the man he believes murdered his mother: you."
