Chapter 23 - The Crimson Contract

“They’re cutting the blast door,” Maria said, springing to her feet, her eyes wide with terror. She grabbed a tactical shotgun from the wall rack, racking a 12-gauge shell into the chamber with terrifying proficiency.
“Thermite will take four minutes to burn through three feet of tungsten carbide,” Ethan said, his analytical mind snapping back into lethal overdrive. He stood up, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead. “The sub-level has a drainage tunnel that leads out through the coastal cliff face to the lower cove. There’s an emergency zodiac boat tethered to the sea cave.”
“And you?” Maria asked, her voice trembling. “Ethan, you can’t fight sixty private military contractors in a closed tunnel!”
“I’m not fighting them in the tunnel,” Ethan said grimly. He walked over to the central communications desk, flipped open an armored steel case, and revealed a set of two red toggle switches. “I built this bunker, Maria. When my father died, I swore that if the Hawthorne syndicate ever turned on me, I would burn the entire empire to ash before I let them touch my family.”
Evelyn struggled to sit up. “The scuttle charges beneath the foundation...”
“Five hundred pounds of military-grade C4 planted in the bedrock of Montauk,” Ethan said coldly. “Once the blast door falls, Thomas will enter this room expecting to find our corpses or our surrender. I will give him neither.”
Ethan turned to the reinforced wall safe behind the desk. He entered an eight-digit bypass code: *0-9-1-4-2-0-1-8*—the date Sophie was born.
The safe hissed open.
Inside lay not cash or gold, but a single black leather binder marked with Caroline’s personal wax seal. Ethan pulled it out and flipped through the yellowed pages. Attached to the final sheet was a sealed envelope containing an original laboratory specimen card—Caroline’s preserved genetic records, alongside a forensic DNA analysis conducted six weeks before her fatal car crash.
Ethan’s eyes scanned the final paragraph of the laboratory report:
*“Paternity Analysis: The genetic markers of Child Subject (Sophie Hawthorne) demonstrate a 99.98% direct biological match to Ethan Hawthorne. The secondary paternal sample (Subject: Thomas Hawthorne) is definitively excluded.”*
Ethan let out a long, ragged exhale.
Caroline had never betrayed him. Thomas had played a monstrous psychological mind game—planting the seed of doubt into Evelyn and the syndicate to tear Ethan apart from the inside out.
“She was mine all along,” Ethan whispered, his jaw setting like granite. He thrust the binder into Maria’s hands. “Take this. If I don’t make it out of this cove, take Sophie to the Swiss consulate in Boston. This document unlocks Caroline’s private trust—eight hundred million dollars in untouchable international reserves. You take Sophie and you disappear. Change your names. Never come back to New York.”
“No!” Maria grabbed Ethan’s tactical vest, tears spilling over her eyelashes. “I spent three years protecting this girl from Vanessa! I didn’t survive that psycho woman, I didn’t survive the courthouse, and I didn't marry you under that magnolia tree just to run away and leave you to die in a hole!”
Ethan grabbed Maria’s face with both hands, pressing his forehead against hers. “You are the bravest woman I have ever known, Maria. But as long as Thomas draws breath, Sophie will never have a life. He wants me dead. I am going to buy you the five minutes you need to reach the open sea.”
*BAM!*

The top hinge of the massive vault blast door turned white-hot, bubbling into molten slag. The subterranean air filled with caustic green smoke.
“Go!” Ethan roared. “Down the drainage tunnel! NOW!”
