Chapter 9 - The Police Arrive

The grand ballroom had descended into a state of refined pandemonium.

When the doors to the service elevators opened, two dozen uniform officers moved into the room, creating a corridor from the bridal suite down the central aisle where thousands of hand-cut orchids still hung from the vaulted ceilings.

The society guests—CEOs, federal judges, European royalty, and old-money heiresses—parted like the Red Sea. Whispers rippled across the room like a shockwave as Margaret Vance was led out in handcuffs, her couture Carolina Herrera dress wrinkled, her hair a bird's nest of disheveled extensions, her face twisted in a silent, venomous mask of fury.

Right behind her walked Vanessa, stripped of her veil and diamonds, wrapped in a generic gray wool coat provided by hotel security, her head hanging so low her chin touched her collarbone.

At the base of the grand staircase, Daniel and Emily walked together.

Daniel had discarded his tuxedo bow tie. His collar was open, but he walked with the broad, unbreakable posture of a man who had just cut out a cancer that had threatened his family for a decade. Beside him, Emily still wore her stained caterer’s apron—a deliberate choice, a badge of survival that made every diamond-clad socialite in the room look utterly pathetic by comparison.

At the champagne bar, pinned against the polished mahogany counter by two armed federal marshals, stood Julian Croft.

Julian’s silk vest was torn at the lapel. His expensive Italian loafers were scuffed. When he saw Daniel approaching, he didn't apologize. He didn't beg. A desperate, feral grin broke across his sweat-glistened face.

"You always were too sentimental, Daniel," Julian sneered, spitting blood onto the Persian rug. "Arthur knew it. That’s why he hid the real documents from you. He knew you’d fall for a pretty girl with an old name. You think you won today? Look around you. The Sterling name is an absolute circus. Every paper in the country is going to run this on the front page tomorrow morning."

Daniel stopped twelve inches from his former best man. He didn't raise a fist. He didn't shout.

He simply leaned forward and whispered into Julian's ear:

"The papers will run your mugshot, Julian. But before they do, every asset you own, every offshore fund tied to your maritime account, and every square foot of real estate you purchased in the last seven years has already been frozen under a federal RICO warrant signed by Judge Vance—Margaret’s own estranged brother-in-law."

May you like

Julian’s feral grin died instantly. The blood drained from his face, leaving him a ghastly, hollow gray.

"Take them all out through the front entrance," Daniel ordered the detectives. "Let the press get every single photograph."
