Chapter 30 - The Fortress in the Sky

Manhattan was eerily quiet beneath the deluge of torrential rain.
The streets surrounding Sterling Tower on Fifth Avenue had been completely barricaded with construction barriers and fake city transit maintenance vehicles, effectively blocking all civilian traffic.
"Local police are being rerouted by an automated cyber loop," Cross reported, monitoring the tower's internal security matrix from the Suburban's terminal. "The lobby is held by eight heavily armed Vanguard contractors. The main elevators have been grounded. Only the private express elevator to the penthouse is operational, running on an independent emergency generator."
Daniel strapped a tactical plate carrier over his torn tuxedo shirt, checking the magazine of his sidearm. "We can't take the lobby head-on. They have the high-ground crossfire."
"There is another way," Emily said, pointing at the building's architectural schematics on the tablet. "The private maintenance shaft Dad built behind the art gallery on the sub-level. It bypasses the lobby entirely and opens into the private library on the forty-third floor."
Cross looked at Emily with newfound respect. "She’s right. That shaft is shielded from internal motion sensors. But once you reach the forty-third floor, you will be cut off from any tactical extraction. You will be completely on your own."
"Then we don't fail," Daniel said simply.
He turned to Emily, his hands resting firmly on her shoulders. "You stay in the command vehicle with Cross. If I am not down by midnight, you initiate the scorched-earth protocol Samuel has in that briefcase. You burn the Sterling accounts, erase the trusts, and take whatever cash reserves remain offshore. Do you hear me?"
Emily grabbed his hands, her grip surprisingly powerful. "No, Daniel. I am not letting you go up there alone. Thomas targeted me because he thought I was the weak link in this family. He thought I was just a fragile socialite who would break under pressure. I want him to look into my eyes when we take our family back."
Daniel stared at his sister, realizing that the timid, quiet girl who had endured years of subtle family cruelty was gone forever. Standing before him was a true Sterling.

"All right," Daniel said, a grim, determined smile touching his lips. "We finish this together."
