Chapter 20 - The Final Deposition

By three o'clock in the morning, the storm had finally passed, leaving the Hudson Valley bathed in a clean, crisp, cold morning fog.
The sprawling grounds of the Sterling Estate were swarming with over fifty federal agents, forensics technicians, and state troopers. The perimeter had been completely reclaimed.
Vanessa Croft sat in the back of an FBI cruiser parked near the carriage house, wrapped in a coarse grey shock blanket. Her diamond wedding ring lay sealed in an evidence bag on the hood of the car. Julian Croft, transported from Manhattan under federal escort, sat in a separate transport van, his face buried in his hands as federal prosecutors drafted indictments for wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and illegal corporate espionage.
On the front terrace, Detective Miller stood beside Judith, who had her camera mounted on a tripod, recording the formal extraction of Eleanor Sterling.
Eleanor was flanked by four federal marshals, her hands bound tightly in steel handcuffs. Despite her soaked clothes and the bruises on her cheek, her chin remained defiantly high. She glared at Daniel as she was marched past the grand double oak doors of the mansion.
"You haven't won anything, Daniel," Eleanor hissed, pausing for a brief second before the agents urged her forward. "You saved your sister tonight. But the Sterling name is tainted forever. Wall Street will open in five hours. The news of your ruined wedding, Margaret’s arrest, and my raid will plunge Sterling Global stock into freefall. The board will strip you of the CEO seat before noon."
Daniel, now wearing a dry charcoal trench coat provided by his security team, stepped down from the terrace steps. His posture was commanding, radiating an aura of absolute, unshakable authority.
"The board won't touch me, Eleanor," Daniel said calmly. "While you were playing pirate in our father's basement, Judith was broadcasting your confession live to seventy-two different media networks and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The world doesn't see a tainted empire. They see a disgraced sister and a corrupt bride who attempted an illegal hostile takeover and failed."
Daniel leaned closer, his voice dropping into a razor-thin whisper that only Eleanor could hear. "And as for the stock... I authorized our primary liquidity reserves to buy back twelve million floating shares the second the market dropped yesterday afternoon. By the time the opening bell rings today, Emily and I will control seventy percent of the voting shares. The Sterling dynasty is completely untouchable."
Eleanor's eyes flashed with pure, impotent rage. She opened her mouth to spit another curse, but the federal marshals pushed her into the armored transport vehicle, slamming the reinforced steel doors shut.
Judith lowered her camera and smiled faintly. "That was quite a deposition, Mr. Sterling. The morning talk shows are calling it the greatest corporate takedown in American history."
"Thank you, Judith," Daniel said, extending a hand to shake hers with deep, genuine gratitude. "Send the invoice for your broadcast services to my personal office. Double whatever your standard rate is. You saved my family tonight."
Judith chuckled softly. "Just make sure you invite me to your next wedding, Daniel. Though I doubt it will have quite this much drama."
As the convoy of federal vehicles began to wind its way down the long driveway, leaving the estate in serene, quiet peace, Emily walked up beside Daniel. In her palm, dripping wet but entirely intact, was the platinum pendant.
"You caught it," Daniel said, looking down at her with a faint, proud smile.
"I didn't throw it into the river," Emily confessed with a mischievous glimmer in her eyes. "I threw it into the coil of spare mooring ropes on the edge of the dock. Did you really think I'd lose the only thing Dad left me?"
May you like
Daniel laughed—a deep, rich sound of sheer relief that he hadn't felt in months. He wrapped his arm around his sister’s shoulders, pulling her close against the morning chill.
"Come on," Daniel said. "Let's go inside. We have an empire to run."
