Chapter 26 - The Safehouse Siege

The smell of cordite and ozone hung heavy in the rain-drenched air.
Daniel moved in a low tactical sprint alongside Cross’s two operators, utilizing the thick decorative hedges lining the stone driveway for cover. Emily remained ten paces back, shielded by Cross himself, who carried a compact tactical shotgun beneath his overcoat with lethal familiarity.
The safehouse, an imposing two-story Georgian manor, was completely dark. Every exterior floodlight had been shot out from a distance.
Through the French doors of the ground-floor living room, the muted flashes of suppressed gunfire strobed against the interior walls. The muffled *thwip-thwip-thwip* of subsonic rounds was followed immediately by the dull thud of a body hitting hardwood.
"Breaching rear service door," the lead operative whispered into his comms.
Daniel followed closely, his heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer. The rear door was ajar, the lock blown apart by a directional breaching charge.
Stepping over the fallen body of a federal marshal whose radio was hissing static, Daniel entered the dark hallway. The interior was trashed; paintings were torn from the walls, marble pedestals shattered, and spent brass casings littered the Persian carpets.
Suddenly, a flashlight beam sliced through the darkness from the top of the grand staircase.
"Contact!" Cross barked.
A hail of high-velocity 5.56 rounds tore through the drywall above Daniel’s head, showering him in plaster dust. Cross fired two deafening blasts from his shotgun into the upper mezzanine, the heavy 12-gauge buckshot obliterating the wooden banister and knocking the unseen shooter backward with a sickening crunch.
Cross’s lead operator pushed forward, firing three controlled pairs into the shadows, clearing the staircase step by step.
"Upstairs! Master suite!" Daniel yelled, recognizing the layout from the blueprint. "That's where the panic room is!"
Daniel surged up the stairs, bypassing the fallen mercenary whose tactical vest was emblazoned with a sterile, unmarked logo.
At the end of the second-floor hallway, the heavy steel door of the master bedroom had been peeled open using an industrial hydraulic spreader. From inside the room came a high-pitched, terrified scream—a scream Daniel recognized with absolute, visceral clarity.
"Please! Don't shoot! I gave you the account numbers! Julian told me you would extract me!" Vanessa’s voice wailed, shrill and hysterical.
Daniel reached the threshold of the master suite.
Standing over a cowering, disheveled figure huddled behind an overturned mahogany bed was an operative clad entirely in urban tactical gear, his suppressed pistol raised, aiming directly at the center of Vanessa’s forehead.
"Julian Vance sends his regards," the hitman muttered coldly.
Before the assassin’s finger could complete the trigger pull, Daniel rounded the corner and fired.
Three hollow-point rounds slammed into the hitman’s side, punching through the unarmored seam beneath his armpit. The assassin gasped, spun on his heel from the kinetic impact, and collapsed heavily onto the floor, his pistol clattering across the polished floorboards.

Silence fell over the room, save for the patter of torrential rain against the skylight and the ragged, choking sobs of the woman on the floor.
