Chapter 7 - The Security Footage from the Valet

Jonathan Hayes adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, stepping into the room with a manila folder of his own. Behind him, the two detectives remained by the door, their badges gleaming against their dark wool overcoats.

"Mr. Sterling," Hayes said, nodding respectfully to Daniel. "I apologize for the delay. We had to wait for the federal warrant to execute simultaneously with the hotel security lockdown."

Margaret went dead pale. "A warrant? On what grounds? This is a civil matter!"

"It was a civil matter until forty minutes ago, Mrs. Vance," Detective Alvarez said, stepping forward. "Until the hotel's valet surveillance cameras caught your associate transferring a black duffle bag into the trunk of your limousine at the 48th Street service entrance."

Hayes opened his folder and handed a series of glossy eight-by-ten printouts to Daniel.

The photos showed the St. Regis valet parking bay at 4:15 p.m., just over an hour before the wedding was scheduled to begin. A man in a dark trench coat was seen meeting with Margaret’s personal driver. In the man’s hands was a sealed fireproof security box.

"We intercepted that vehicle two blocks away on Lexington Avenue," Hayes explained. "Inside that box was not just the original codicil to Arthur Sterling’s will, which Mrs. Vance’s private investigators illegally seized from the family’s summer home in Martha’s Vineyard three weeks ago. There were also bearer bond certificates worth forty-two million dollars, registered under the name of Emily Sterling."

Daniel looked from the photos to Margaret. "You didn't just want Emily discredited. You already found her inheritance, and you were moving it out of the country before the vows were even spoken."

"She was going to wire the funds to an account in Limassol by midnight," Detective Alvarez added, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. "Under international maritime shell corporations. Fortunately, Mr. Sterling’s private security had placed an RFID tracker on Mrs. Vance’s vehicle three days ago following a tip from Miss Judith Lane."

Vanessa looked at her mother in total, paralyzing disbelief. "Mother... you had forty-two million dollars? You told me we were broke! You told me if I didn't marry Daniel today, the bank would foreclose on the townhouse!"

Margaret looked away, refusing to meet her daughter’s eyes. The brutal truth hung in the air like poison gas: Margaret hadn't just used Daniel; she had used her own daughter as the disposable pawn to distract the Sterling family while she executed the ultimate heist.
