Chapter 8 - Unmasking the Accomplice

"Wait," Emily said suddenly, stepping closer to the photos Jonathan Hayes had brought. Her finger pointed to the man in the trench coat talking to Margaret’s driver in the valet bay. "Daniel, look at his hand. The signet ring on his left pinky finger."
Daniel snatched the photo, holding it under the direct light of the vanity mirror.
The man’s face was obscured by a low-brimmed fedora and the shadow of the parking canopy. But on his left hand was a heavy gold ring featuring an engraving of an anchor entwined with an ivy branch—the exclusive insignia of the Yale Maritime Society, class of 1988.
Daniel’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen.
There were only three men in New York who owned that specific ring. One was dead. One lived in Tokyo.
The third was currently standing downstairs in the grand ballroom, acting as Daniel’s best man.
"Julian," Daniel whispered.
Julian Croft had been Daniel’s closest confidant since their days at boarding school. He was the Chief Financial Officer of Sterling Logistics, the man who had reviewed the prenuptial agreements, the man who had insisted that Daniel hire Margaret’s preferred catering company to 'support family ties,' and the man who, twenty minutes ago, had patted Daniel on the shoulder at the altar and whispered: *‘Relax, brother. Today, everything falls into place.’*
"Julian had power of attorney over the Martha’s Vineyard estate," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, hollow whisper. "He was the only person who had the security codes to the subterranean safe where my father stored the physical bearer bonds."
"Mr. Croft is currently being detained at the champagne bar downstairs by two off-duty marshals," Jonathan Hayes reported smoothly. "He tried to slip out through the kitchen pantry the moment Judith Lane started projecting that camera footage onto the banquet hall monitors."
Vanessa covered her mouth, her body shaking with uncontrollable tremors. "Julian was... Julian was working with my mother?"
"Julian was sleeping with your mother, you pathetic little fool," Emily said with cutting precision, turning her gaze back to the ruined bride. "Did you really think Margaret was orchestrating this level of corporate fraud on her own? She hasn't managed a balance sheet in her life. Julian was running the numbers. And once you were safely married to Daniel, Julian was scheduled to take over the restructured board as interim CEO the moment my father's suspicious death was leaked to the SEC to force Daniel’s temporary resignation."
Margaret lunged forward, her nails clawing at the air toward Emily. "You arrogant little bitch! Arthur should have choked you in your crib! You ruined everything! You and your miserable, self-righteous father!"

Detective Alvarez didn't hesitate. In one fluid, brutal motion, he grabbed Margaret’s arm, spun her around, and slammed her against the vanity table. The sharp click of the steel cuffs echoed off the gilded mirrors.
"Margaret Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and tampering with evidence in an ongoing homicide investigation," Alvarez recited coldly.
