Chapter 28 - The Architect’s Secret

"Where is the master cipher, Vanessa?" Daniel growled, tightening his grip on her collar until her breath came in ragged gasps.

"I don't have it! I swear!" she cried out. "Julian had the hardware drive, but it needed a physical key to activate the satellite uplinks—something that was split between the Sterling trusts!"

"The ring," Emily whispered suddenly.

Daniel turned his head sharply toward his sister. "What?"

Emily stepped forward, pointing an accusing finger at Vanessa’s left hand. Even amidst the chaos, blood, and filth, the massive eight-carat emerald-cut diamond engagement ring Daniel had presented to Vanessa still glittered on her finger.

"That wasn't the ring you bought from Cartier, Daniel," Emily said, her voice trembling with realization. "Remember? Vanessa insisted on taking the stone to her private jeweler on Madison Avenue two weeks before the wedding to have the platinum prongs 'reinforced.' She claimed the original setting was loose!"

Vanessa tried to pull her left hand behind her back, but Cross moved with terrifying speed. The older attorney grabbed her wrist in an iron grip, pinned her hand against the marble dresser, and drew a miniature tactical laser-cutter from his vest.

"No! Stop! Don't!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing wildly.

Cross ignored her screams. With surgical precision, he focused the concentrated beam onto the platinum base under the diamond. With a soft sizzle of melting alloy, the mounting cracked open.

Beneath the flawless eight-carat diamond lay a microscopically etched gallium-arsenide micro-transponder, no larger than a grain of sand, glowing with a faint, pulsing ultraviolet light.

"It's a proximity cipher," Cross breathed, examining the recovered chip with a magnifying eyepiece. "It wasn't meant to steal the Sterling files remotely. It was designed to transmit the root-access codes the moment Vanessa stood next to Daniel at the altar, where the family's biometric server terminal was located beneath the chapel stage."

Daniel stared at the microchip, feeling a wave of nauseating disgust wash over him.

The entire wedding—the months of planning, the four hundred high-profile guests, the vows, the grand illusion of romance—was nothing more than an elaborate physical staging area to bring an espionage device within ten feet of the Sterling mainframe.

"You disgust me," Daniel whispered, releasing Vanessa. She collapsed back against the wall, sobbing into her bruised hands.

"Take her," Daniel ordered Cross’s surviving operator. "Deliver her directly to the director of the FBI’s counter-intelligence division. If she tries to speak to anyone else, let her face Thomas Sterling’s cleaners alone."

The operative hauled Vanessa to her feet and dragged her out of the room, her muffled apologies echoing down the hallway until they vanished into the storm.

"Cross," Daniel said, turning to the attorney. "Call my father. Put him on the line right now."
