Chapter 31 - The Midnight Protocol

The air in the private library on the forty-third floor was freezing, cooled by the high-output server air-conditioning units humming behind the reinforced walls.
Daniel moved silently through the dark room, his weapon raised, Emily stepping precisely in his shadow. The smell of burning fiber-optic cabling and ozone hung thick in the air.
At the far end of the corridor, the massive blast doors leading into the Ares mainframe vault stood wide open.
Bathed in the eerie cobalt glow of eighty interconnected server towers stood an elderly man.
He was tall, impeccably tailored in a double-breasted Savile Row suit, with silver hair identical to Arthur’s. But where Arthur’s face carried the burden of remorse, this man’s face was twisted into a cold, predatory mask of triumph.
Thomas Sterling.
Surrounding him were four elite mercenaries armed with suppressed tactical carbines, their laser sights tracing patterns across the room.
"You are five minutes late, nephew," Thomas said without turning around, his cultured British accent echoing off the glass servers. "I expected Arthur's son to have slightly better punctuality."
The four mercenaries snapped their weapons around, training their red laser dots directly onto Daniel’s chest and Emily’s forehead.
Daniel did not flinch. He kept his weapon aimed squarely at the back of his uncle's head. "Shut down the uplink, Thomas. Vanessa is in federal custody. The Marshals have her confession. Your syndicate is exposed."
Thomas chuckled—a dry, rasping laugh that sent a shiver through the room. He turned slowly, holding a sleek carbon-fiber tablet that displayed a rapidly descending digital clock: **00:01:42... 00:01:41...**
"Vanessa was an actress, Daniel," Thomas said smoothly, his eyes gleaming with mad brilliance. "A decorative little pawn designed to keep your eyes fixed on matrimonial betrayal while my teams established root access. Did you really think this was about an inheritance? Or a wedding?"
Thomas gestured toward the colossal central monitor displaying the Ares interface.
"The Ares algorithm is not a weapon to crash the markets, Daniel. That was the lie Arthur told the government to secure their funding. Ares is a master sovereign bypass key. Once that clock hits zero, it doesn't destroy the financial system—it transfers total, untraceable controlling interest of the seventy largest corporate conglomerates on Earth directly into a private sovereign account."
Emily gasped. "You don't want to destroy the world... you want to own it."
"I built it!" Thomas roared, his calm facade shattering into raw, venomous fury. "Arthur stole my code! He stole my life! He buried me in Hong Kong and took the credit for thirty years of technological dominance! Tonight, the true architect reclaims his throne!"
"Not while I'm breathing," Daniel snarled, stepping forward.
"A condition that is easily remedied," Thomas said softly, raising his right hand to snap his fingers.
Before the mercenaries could squeeze their triggers, the entire forty-fourth floor suddenly plunged into pitch-black darkness as an ear-splitting explosion rocked the exterior glass facade of the penthouse.
The building shook violently. The emergency klaxons began to wail, flashing blinding crimson light across the vault.
Through the shattered floor-to-ceiling windows, the deafening roar of a heavy tactical helicopter swept over the balcony. Red laser sights painted the vault from the exterior storm clouds—not targeting Daniel, but targeting Thomas’s men.
From the hallway behind Daniel, a slow, deliberate footstep echoed over the screaming sirens.
A figure stepped into the flashing red light of the vault, holding a heavy-caliber handgun.
Daniel glanced back, expecting Samuel Cross.
It was not Cross.
Standing in the doorway, clad in a dripping black trench coat, was Arthur Sterling himself, his eyes burning with absolute, deadly vengeance.
"Hello, brother," Arthur said, raising his gun.
Thomas froze, the tablet slipping from his fingers as the countdown clock hit **00:00:10... 00:00:09...**
Suddenly, the private satellite phone inside Daniel's pocket began to ring violently, vibrating against his ribs with a shrill, deafening tone—a private frequency that only one other person on Earth possessed.
Daniel reached down, pulled the phone out, and glanced at the caller ID flashing on the glowing screen:
May you like
**INCOMING CALL: ELEANOR STERLING.**
Daniel’s blood turned completely to liquid nitrogen as the countdown hit **00:00:03...**
