Chapter 4 - Blood Money and Broken Vows

Emily dropped the file onto the glass table. The paper fanned out, revealing photocopies of a document dated three days before Arthur Sterling passed away.

Daniel leaned over and stared at the signatures. His father’s bold, angular script was on the bottom line. Below it was a notary stamp from Cook County.

"Arthur didn't cut me out, Daniel," Emily said softly, looking at her brother with an ache that ran deeper than the humiliation in the ballroom. "He tried to protect me from them. When Dad found out that Margaret’s family firm was laundering offshore assets through Sterling Logistics, he threatened to turn them in. Two weeks later, his heart medication was altered. He knew he was dying. He knew if I stayed in the penthouse, I’d be next."

The room seemed to drop ten degrees. Marcus Cole instinctively moved his hand closer to his side holster.

"That’s slander!" Margaret shrieked, her voice hitting a glass-shattering pitch. "Arthur had congestive heart failure! The coroner ruled it natural causes! You were a drug-addicted runaway who broke your father’s heart!"

"I was twenty-two and terrified," Emily replied, taking a step toward the older woman. "Dad told me to disappear until you and Vanessa had fully committed yourselves to a legal trap. He told me that if Vanessa ever tried to marry Daniel, she would have to sign the standard Sterling disclosure form—which meant submitting all of her family’s offshore trusts for audit."

Daniel’s mind raced backward through the last eighteen months of his courtship with Vanessa. The endless delays in finalizing the prenuptial audit. The excuses Vanessa’s family made about foreign accounts in the Cayman Islands being held up in probate. Margaret had repeatedly insisted that the wedding proceed first, promising the financial disclosures would follow within thirty days of the ceremony.

"You needed the wedding to happen today," Daniel realized out loud, his eyes piercing into Vanessa. "Because once you were legally my wife, under New York estate law, any pending corporate investigation into your family's prior dealings with my father's firm would be barred by spousal conflict of interest clauses unless I filed for criminal fraud."

Vanessa finally lifted her tear-streaked face. "Daniel, please... I didn't want to hurt Emily. My mother said... she said if Emily showed up at the wedding, she would contest the entire estate! She said Emily had the real codicil to your father's will!"

"And you thought planting a stolen bracelet on her would solve that?" Daniel asked, his lip curling with disgust. "You thought having her dragged out in handcuffs by hotel security would discredit her?"

"A convicted felon cannot contest a probate trust in the state of New York," Emily said flatly, looking at Margaret. "That was your play, wasn't it? If I was caught on camera stealing a quarter-million-dollar diamond piece during your daughter's reception, any legal affidavit I brought forward concerning my father's murder or his altered will would be dismissed as the retaliatory lies of a criminal sister."

Margaret didn't answer. Her silence was a confession carved in stone.
