Chapter 5 - The Father's Secret Trust

The heavy silence in the bridal suite was broken by the sharp ding of an iPad. Judith Lane, who had been sitting quietly by the door monitoring the cloud upload of her camera files, stood up.
"Daniel," Judith said, her voice steady and deliberate. "You need to see this. When Arthur was in the hospital, he didn't just give Emily instructions. He gave me a sealed memory drive. He told me to keep it until the day you stood at the altar with someone from the Vance family."
Vanessa’s head snapped toward Judith. Margaret lunged forward to grab the iPad, but Marcus Cole caught her wrist in a vice grip, pinning her arm to her side without a shred of ceremony.
"Let go of me! You have no right to restrain me!" Margaret screamed.
"Keep her quiet," Daniel said, his gaze fixed on Judith.
Judith tapped the screen and spun the tablet to face Daniel and Emily.
On the screen was a video recorded five years prior. The setting was the palliative care suite at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Arthur Sterling, gaunt and tethered to oxygen tubes but with his eyes burning with the unmistakable fire of a titan who refused to die on his knees, looked directly into the lens.
*"If you are watching this, Daniel,"* Arthur’s raspy voice filled the suite, *"it means I failed to keep Margaret Vance away from my son. And it means you were blind enough to look at her daughter and see love instead of an executioner."*
Daniel swallowed hard, the muscles in his throat constricting.
*"Margaret’s late husband didn't leave her an empire; he left her eighty million dollars in debt to Russian syndicates operating out of Cyprus,"* the elder Sterling continued on the recording, his breath hitching between words. *"When I discovered they were using our shipping lines to cover the deficit, I threatened Margaret with federal exposure. That night, my digital IV drip was hacked. The dosage was spiked. I couldn't prove it in time to save myself, but I could save Emily. I sent her into hiding with the only asset they couldn't touch: the physical master keys to the bearer shares in Zurich."*
Arthur paused on the screen, looking toward the side of the camera where a younger, terrified Emily had once stood off-frame.
*"Daniel, the bracelet Vanessa wears on her wrist today—the Cartier panther—was not bought by her family. It was stolen from your mother’s safe thirty years ago by Margaret. If Margaret is trying to frame Emily with it today, it’s because she wants to close the circle. Do not marry her. Strip them bare. And give your sister what I promised her."*
The video cut to black.

Daniel stood completely motionless. He reached down, slowly sliding the heavy platinum wedding band off his own ring finger. He looked at it for a fraction of a second before letting it drop onto the glass table, where it landed with a dull, hollow thud next to Margaret’s scattered pills.
"Get out of that dress," Daniel said to Vanessa.
