Chapter 13 - The Ghost of Eleanor Sterling

The name Eleanor Sterling was a phantom that had haunted the periphery of Daniel’s childhood like an urban legend whispered by household staff who were fired the next morning.
Back in the grand ballroom, the emergency sirens outside on Fifth Avenue howled in deafening unison as three additional tactical units from the NYPD surrounded the St. Regis. Guests were being corralled into the outer mezzanine by federal officers who had caught wind of the high-stakes cyber intrusion at the Sterling estate. But inside the cordoned-off VIP alcove, Daniel, Emily, and Detective Miller stood in rigid silence around Judith’s live feed.
"She’s thirty-eight years old," Daniel stated, his voice devoid of emotion, though his jaw muscles clenched until they ached. "Arthur’s first daughter. Born to a Swiss heiress before my father ever met my mother. When she was eighteen, she attempted to liquidate Sterling Aerospace through an offshore shell company. Dad covered it up, paid off the international tribunals, and declared her legally deceased after a fabricated boating accident off the coast of Monaco."
"He didn't just declare her dead, Daniel," Emily murmured, clutching a warm wool coat an officer had draped over her stained shoulders. Her eyes were fixed on the screen. "Look at the safe she opened. That's not the primary treasury box. That's the *Sub-Level 4 Archival Repository*."
Detective Miller stepped forward, wiping sweat from his brow. "Mr. Sterling, our Hudson Valley precinct dispatched four patrol units the second your security tripped. ETA is twelve minutes. The estate is forty miles north. Can local units breach those perimeter gates?"
"No," Daniel replied coldly. "The Hudson Valley estate was engineered with automated defensive countermeasures. If Eleanor has the biometric master key, she has control of the perimeter vulcan barriers. Any local officer who steps onto the grounds without the deactivation sequence will trigger an electrified lockdown."
On the camera screen, Eleanor casually flipped open a thick, leather-bound docket stamped with the unmistakable wax seal of the Sterling Family Trust. She held a single document up to the lens. It was not a stock certificate or a deed to real estate.
It was an adoption decree.
"Did you really believe Arthur loved you more than his own blood, Daniel?" Eleanor’s voice filtered through the wireless link, her aristocratic smile dripping with condescension. "You were three years old when Arthur brought you home from an orphanage in Boston to replace the son he lost. You are a Sterling in name, Daniel. But you don't possess an ounce of our father’s DNA. Emily does. Only Emily."
A collective gasp rippled through the few remaining confidants in the room.
Daniel didn't flinch. His expression remained carved from granite, though Emily let out a sharp cry of denial.
"That's a lie!" Emily yelled at the monitor. "Daniel is my brother! Dad gave him everything! He made Daniel the sole executor of the entire dynasty!"
"Because Arthur was a coward who couldn't bear the thought of his real daughter taking what was rightfully hers," Eleanor answered through the screen, as if she could hear Emily’s anguish across the forty miles of fiber-optic cable. "Julian Croft and Margaret Vance were greedy fools. I promised them a thirty percent cut of the liquid assets if they engineered a wedding scandal large enough to pin your legal team down in Manhattan for six hours. They delivered. Vanessa played her part beautifully, spilling soup on the little princess to create a media circus."
Eleanor slid the documents into a reinforced titanium briefcase.

"Now," Eleanor continued, looking straight down the barrel of the camera lens, "under Article 12 of the Sterling Bloodline Covenant, a non-biological heir’s authority is instantly revoked the moment a biological firstborn claims the lineage seat in person at the ancestral vault. As of two minutes ago, Daniel... your accounts are frozen. Your private jets are grounded. And the security force guarding your life belongs to me."
As if on cue, the two armed private bodyguards standing at the perimeter of the bridal suite reached for their holsters.
