Chapter 33 - The Scorched Earth Protocol

"Richard, don't!" Daniel shouted, raising both hands, terror gripping his heart.
The entire room froze.
"Forty years I spent building Hale Global," Richard croaked, his breathing becoming shallow, his grip on the detonator trembling with Parkinsonian tremors. "I broke laws. I broke Clara. I raised you, Daniel, to be ruthless... and you disappointed me the moment you chose sentiment over the Thorne merger. You let Emily’s tears dictate corporate policy."
"You destroyed a family for dirt and concrete!" Daniel yelled back, his voice echoing off the sterile tiles. "Look at what you’ve done! You're dying in a padded cell with an oxygen tank, surrounded by men who want you dead!"
"I am dying on my own terms!" the old man roared, a sudden, terrifying burst of vitality surging through his frail body. "Havenwood sits on two hundred thousand gallons of industrial propane. The foundations are rigged. If I cannot have the North Harbor trust... no one will. The deeds burn with us!"
"He’s bluffing!" Julian screamed, panic breaking through his composure. His gun wavered between Richard and Daniel. "Shoot him, Daniel! Kill him before he presses it!"
"Nobody shoots!" Daniel commanded, taking a measured, slow step toward the wheelchair, his eyes locked on his father’s withered hand. "Father... look at Emily. Look at the daughter you discarded."
Emily stepped forward. She didn't look at the gun. She didn't look at the detonator. She walked directly past Julian Vance, completely ignoring the barrel of his weapon, and knelt by the side of Clara’s bed.
"Don't touch her!" Julian screamed, swinging his pistol toward Emily’s head.
*BANG!*
The gunshot was deafening in the enclosed concrete room.
Julian Vance stiffened. His eyes widened in shock. The gun slipped from his fingers, clattering uselessly against the linoleum. He looked down at his chest, where a dark crimson circle bloomed across his immaculate white shirt.
Behind him, standing in the doorway with smoke trailing from the barrel of a customized silver Kimber .45, was Vanessa Thorne.
Her face was bruised, her designer dress torn and soaked in mud, blood dripping from a gash along her hairline from the car crash. But her hand was steady as an iron vice.
"That’s for my father, Julian," Vanessa whispered, her voice venomous.
Julian collapsed to his knees, gasping for air, before falling face-first onto the cold tile, motionless.
Emily didn't even look back at the dead man. With shaking, frantic fingers, she tore at the heavy leather straps binding her mother’s wrists. "I’ve got you, Mom. I’ve got you. It’s over. I'm here."
Clara wrapped her emaciated, trembling arms around Emily’s neck, burying her face into her daughter’s hair, letting out a primal, weeping wail that had been trapped inside her chest for twenty-two years.
Daniel turned slowly back toward the wheelchair, keeping his weapon trained on Richard.
"Put the detonator down, Father," Daniel said softly. "It’s done. Julian is dead. Vanessa gave you up. Clara is free."
Richard Hale looked down at the dead body of Julian Vance, then at Emily holding Clara in the corner, and finally at Daniel. A bitter, defeated sigh escaped his cracked lips.
The red LED on the detonator blinked out. The device slipped from his frail fingers, tumbling into his lap.
"You win, Daniel," Richard whispered, his head slumping back against the headrest, his breathing turning into a ragged, deathly rattle. "Take them... take the briefcase. Take the original deeds. But you don't know... what you’ve unleashed..."
"What are you talking about?" Daniel demanded, grabbing the silver briefcase from Richard’s lap.
Richard’s eyes fluttered, rolling back into his head, his skin turning an ashen, slate grey. *"The third partner... the syndicate... they never cared about the land, Daniel. They cared about... what was buried underneath the harbor..."*
The oxygen concentrator let out a long, continuous, high-pitched error tone.
Richard Hale’s head fell forward.

The architect of their misery was dead.
