Chapter 24 - The Voice on the Other End of the Line

The room smelled of burned paper and sulfur.

Daniel approached the desk with measured steps, his gun trained on the dark terrace outside. Emily stood in the doorway, her hand covering her mouth as she looked at the destroyed family records.

"Everything Father wrote," she whispered, her eyes filling with tears. "It’s gone."

Before Daniel could answer, the burner phone began to vibrate violently against the scorched mahogany.

The harsh electronic ringtone cut through the quiet room like a siren. The caller ID on the tiny, glowing LCD screen showed a string of encrypted digits: *UNAVAILABLE.*

"Daniel, don't answer it," Emily warned, stepping into the room, her voice tight with fear. "It’s Vance’s associates. They want to intimidate us."

Daniel stared at the vibrating device. His heart beat a heavy, thunderous cadence against his ribs. Every instinct screamed at him to crush the phone beneath the heel of his shoe, to end the nightmare that had started the moment Vanessa dropped that emerald bracelet into Emily’s bag.

Instead, he reached out and pressed the green button. He raised the phone to his ear.

"It’s over, Julian," Daniel said, his voice hard as flint. "You're spending the rest of your life in ADX Florence. Your empire is burned."

For three long seconds, there was only the sound of heavy, labored breathing on the other end of the line. A rhythmic, mechanical wheeze—the unmistakable sound of a medical oxygen concentrator.

Then, a voice spoke.

It wasn't Julian Vance.

It wasn't Margaret.

The voice was deeper, older, carrying the gravelly, commanding cadence of a man who had ruled Chicago with an iron fist for forty years—a voice Daniel had heard lowered into a marble crypt in Graceland Cemetery five years ago.

*"Daniel,"* the voice wheezed, trembling with age and exhaustion. *"Listen to me very carefully."*

Daniel froze. The gun slipped from his fingers, clattering uselessly against the Persian rug. His breath caught in his throat, his knees buckling slightly under the sudden, suffocating weight of impossible reality.

"F... Father?" Daniel gasped, his voice breaking into a childish, terrified whisper.

Emily rushed forward, grabbing Daniel’s arm. "Daniel? Who is it? Who’s on the phone?!"

The voice through the receiver exhaled a ragged, agonizing breath.

*"Julian Vance didn't steal those documents, son. I did. You have to take Emily and leave the country tonight, Daniel. Do not let her look into the grave. Stop her before she uncovers what I really did to her mother..."*

The line went dead with a hollow, echoing tone.

Daniel stood paralyzed, staring in horror at the blank screen of the phone, while Emily watched him in mounting terror, completely unaware of the monstrous shadow that had just resurrected itself from the ashes of their family.
