Chapter 21 - The Trap Snaps Shut on Julian Vance

The boardroom descended into chaos. Two directors stood up, shouting over each other, while legal counsel scrambled through piles of legal briefs.
"This is illegal!" Daniel shouted, lunging toward the table, but security guards hired by Vance stepped into his path, hands resting menacingly beneath their suit jackets. "Vanessa had no legal right to transfer those warrants—the Sterling trust was frozen by court injunction yesterday morning!"
Julian leaned back in his chair, folding his hands over his stomach. "An injunction issued in Illinois, Daniel. The Sterling offshore warrants were domiciled in Zurich. Under Swiss banking law, ownership transfers instantly upon personal presentation. Leo is now the largest individual voting shareholder in this room."
Leo stood silently, his gaze scanning the mahogany room, landing first on Daniel, and then lingering on Emily. His expression was an unreadable mask of cold detachment.
"Is that what he told you, Leo?" Emily’s voice sliced through the commotion, astonishingly calm, perfectly measured.
Julian frowned, his arrogant composure cracking for the briefest fraction of a second. "Emily, be quiet and accept your severance. You were a florist six months ago; you don't belong in this room."
Emily didn't look at Julian. She looked directly into Leo’s eyes.
"Julian told you our father abandoned you, didn't he?" Emily said, taking a step toward the boy. "He told you Richard Hale paid millions to keep you locked away in boarding schools while Daniel and I lived in luxury."
Leo’s jaw tightened. "He didn't just tell me. He showed me the wire transfers from Hale Logistics to the Alpine Academy. Five hundred thousand dollars a year to keep me out of sight."
"Those weren't maintenance payments, Leo," Emily said softly, pulling a yellowed document from her briefcase. "Those were extortion payments."
She slid the paper across the table until it stopped directly in front of the boy.
"Julian kidnapped you from the hospital the night our aunt Claire died," Emily continued, her voice echoing in the dead silence of the boardroom. "Our father spent six years looking for you before Julian finally sent the first ransom demand. Richard paid every single year under the condition that you were kept safe and educated. Father didn't abandon you, Leo. He was keeping you alive."
Leo’s blue-gray eyes flicked rapidly across the document—an authentic police missing-persons report dated twenty-four years ago, bearing Richard Hale’s signature and a verified FBI investigative seal.

Julian’s face darkened with rage. "He’s lying to you, Leo! Sign the proxy execution form now!"
