Chapter 18 - Margaret’s Midnight Confession in the Rain

The rain had turned into a relentless downpour by 2:00 AM when the buzzer at Emily’s Lincoln Park brownstone began ringing continuously.

Daniel, who had refused to leave his sister alone after their return from Boston, reached the front foyer before Emily could descend the staircase. He drew back the heavy wooden deadbolt, ready to confront whatever corporate goons Vance had sent.

Instead, Margaret Sterling collapsed across the threshold.

The matriarch who had once carried herself like European royalty looked like an escaped inmate. Her tailored beige trench coat was soaked black with rainwater, her makeup smeared across hollow, sunken cheeks. Her diamond rings clicked against the tiled floor as she crawled forward onto her knees.

"Daniel... shut the door," Margaret choked out, her breath rattling. "Shut the door! He knows I came here!"

Emily came down the stairs, freezing on the third step. She stared at the woman who had smirked as the police officers gripped Emily’s wrists in the hotel suite six months ago.

"Get up, Margaret," Emily said coldly, crossing her arms. "You don't get to play the victim in my home."

"You don't understand," Margaret sobbed, looking up at Emily with genuine terror in her bloodshot eyes. "Julian took her. He took Vanessa."

Daniel grabbed Margaret by the lapels of her coat and hoisted her into an armchair in the parlor. "Start talking, Margaret. What third child was my father talking about on that tape?"

Margaret flinched as if struck. "He told you? Richard actually recorded it?"

"Tell us everything," Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "Before I hand you over to the district attorney for corporate fraud and perjury."

Margaret shivered, wrapping her wet arms around herself. "Thirty years ago, Julian had an affair with your mother, Daniel. Before she married Richard. But the child wasn't his. The child belonged to Richard. When your mother died, Richard took you, but he abandoned the infant born to her sister—my younger sister, Claire."

Emily stared at her. "Another sister?"

"A brother," Margaret whispered, weeping openly now. "A boy named Leo. Julian hid him in boarding schools across Switzerland. Julian raised him to believe Richard Hale discarded him like trash. Julian used my family’s debts to force Vanessa into marrying you, Daniel. The wedding was supposed to secure the capital. But when Vanessa failed—when Judith’s video leaked online and ruined everything—Julian decided to bring Leo back to the United States."

Margaret looked directly into Emily's eyes, her voice trembling with raw despair. "Julian doesn't want the shares anymore. He wants to destroy Hale Enterprises from the inside. And Vanessa went to his penthouse tonight to trade her stock warrants for our freedom. She hasn't come out."
