Chapter 22 - A Sister’s Cold Reckoning

Leo did not reach for the pen.

His hand trembled as his fingers brushed the weathered paper. The date on the FBI report matched his birth certificate to the exact hour. At the bottom of the yellowed sheet was a handwritten note from Richard Hale, preserved in the archives: *Find my boy. Offer them the entire company if necessary.*

"Julian?" Leo whispered, turning his head slowly toward the man who had raised him in sterile European boarding schools. "Is this real?"

Julian’s mask dropped completely. The aristocratic charm evaporated into snarling, cornered viciousness. "You fool. You think some sentimental scrap of paper changes what you are? You're a pawn I fed and clothed for twenty years! Sign the documents or you leave this building with nothing!"

Before Leo could react, Vanessa broke away from the bodyguards at the back of the room.

With a desperate cry, she lunged toward Julian, grabbing the heavy silver pen from the table and hurling it against the panoramic glass window, where it shattered the inner glaze with a loud crack.

"Don't do it, Leo!" Vanessa screamed, her voice hoarse, tears cutting tracks through her makeup. "He killed your mother! Claire didn't die of a hemorrhage—she overdosed on the sedatives Julian put in her IV!"

"Shut up, you wretched girl!" Julian roared, rising from his chair and raising his hand to strike Vanessa across the face.

He never got the chance.

Daniel crossed the distance in two strides. His right fist connected squarely with Julian Vance’s jaw with a sickening, violent crunch. The force of the blow lifted the older man off his feet, sending him crashing backward across the mahogany conference table, scattering crystal water pitchers and legal briefs in an explosion of wet glass.

Vance’s security guards moved forward, but the building’s armed security team, accompanied by two federal agents, burst through the double doors with weapons drawn.

"Federal agents! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!"

Julian lay sprawled across the shattered glass, groaning, blood pouring from his split lip.

Vanessa sank to her knees on the floor, shaking uncontrollably, her hands covering her face as the sobbing tore through her chest.

Emily walked over slowly, standing over her former sister-in-law. For a moment, the entire room held its breath, remembering the wedding reception where Vanessa had stood over Emily in exactly the same way, sneering with merciless cruelty.

Vanessa looked up through swollen eyes, her voice barely a croak. "Emily... please. I didn't know about Claire. I swear to God, I didn't know he killed her..."

Emily looked down at her with cold, untroubled clarity. "Your apology letter said you loved making me feel powerless, Vanessa."

Vanessa wept, lowering her head to the floor. "I’m sorry... I'm so sorry..."

"I believe you are," Emily said quietly, stepping around her without offering a hand. "Now get out of my father's building."
